“Memorial to Christopher and Sarah D'Oyly” (original) (raw)
Christopher D'Oyly was an eminent barrister and politician. According to the inscription here, "His professional abilities were ever engaged in acts of humanity, in allaying animosities, in composing differences." His wife Sarah, who outlived him” by over twenty-five years, was the granddaughter of the famous physician Sir Hans Sloane (as also mentioned in the inscription). The King's England volume on Surrey gives precedence to the widow, describing the monument as "a fine work” by Chantrey with a woman weeping for Sarah D'Oyly and her husband," adding that "Chantrey did some of his first works" in her family house at Twickenham (302).
