Gaskell, Elizabeth.The Grey Woman,frontispiece
This quaintly rustic design invites the reader to proceed through the gateway and become immersed in the provincial culture of Gaskell’s text. On this occasion the design works not so much as prolepsis as a calculated withholding of information which put a question in the reader/viewer’s mind: what characters will be found in this quiet cluster of buildings?
