Sambourne depicts this author of many inspirational books, the most famous of which bore the title Self Help, sitting amidst (and resting his feet upon) them while drinking from a bottle of wine labelled “Neidissdick 4. Dry Monopoly” as the fumes or clouds of Self Help swirl overhead. The cartoon would seem to imply that Smiles himself received the most from his books, and if so, is a little more biting than many of Sambourne’s caricatures.
