The hippopotamus
Harrison Weir
1878
Chromolithograph.
5 5/8 x 4 ¼ inches
Illustration for The Pictorial Cabinet of Marvels, unnumbered page.
A chromolithographic version of one of Weir’s paintings. Weir’s representation of the hippopotamus is anatomically correct, but his treatment of the crocodile is uncharacteristically cartoon-like.
