St Matthew and St Mark, by James Powell & Sons (original) (raw)

Two Evangelists

James Powell & Sons

St James

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight

After 1870

These are two of the Gospel-writers, probably Matthew and Mark because another pair appear to be St Luke and St John (who, as usual, is clean-shaven). The window was installed in memory of William Squire, who died on 1 August 1865 at the age of 75, and his son William Jospeh Squire of the Royal Fusiliers, who died on 18 November 1870, aged only 32. The scenes below illustrate the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The text above these scenes reads, "Go thou and do likewise."
