"Between Glenuig and Roshven 1856" by Jemima Blackburn (née Wedderburn) (original) (raw)

The two Victorian women dressed in brown capes riding side saddle on skillfully rendered tan and brown horses immediately arrest our attention in this Blackburn painting as does the rocky landscape filled with craggy trees and moss of varying shades of green. In the foreground Blackburn places two additional members of the party, a gentleman with a walking stickand a woman covered almost entirely by a brown umbrella. The figures are Isabella and Rebecca Blackburn on horseback, Hugh Blackburn, and Jemima herself (invisible under the umbrella). The Blackburn women are quite unlike the frail Victorians one associates with the period but real adventurers who travel rough terrain as readily as Hugh Blackburn. — Catherine Golden
