This young woman with close-cropped hair, a plain bodice and strapped smock-dess, holds her gleanings in a rural setting, and makes no claims to being fashionable or having any social standing. But she has great natural grace, and a look of innocence that is very attractive. This is a testimony to the artist's eye for beauty that is all the more appealing because it is so unadorned and unaffected. — Jacqueline Banerjee
