Volcanic Tsunamis | John Seach (original) (raw)

How Do Volcanoes Produce Tsunamis?
Volcanoes produce tsunamis through ten different mechanisms.

Volcanic earthquakes (22%), pyroclastic flows impacting on water (20%), submarine explosions (19%), caldera collapse (9%), avalanches of cold rock (7%), base surges with accompanying shock waves (7%), avalanches of hot material (6%), lahars impacting on water (4.5%), air waves of explosions (4.5%), lava avalanching into sea (1%).

Waves produced by volcanic tsunamis can be as high as those produced by the largest earthquakes. The most devastating volcanic tsunami recorded was that produced by the eruption of Krakatau in 1883. The waves had runup heights of 40 m and killed 36,000 people.

About 20-25% of all fatalities at volcanoes during the past 250 years have been caused by volcanic tsunamis (Latter 1981, Bull Volcanol 44(3):467–490; Auker et al.2013, J Appl Volcanol 2:2).
