Brarena, escorted by an Italian destroyer, was sunk on July 22-1941 by a British Blenheim aircraft off Pantelleria when on a voyage from Palermo to Tripoli.

This company had another Brarena later on. Originally delivered in Apr.-1947 from Eriksbergs mek. Verkstads A/B, Gothenburg as Havbør (P. Meyer, Oslo), 9802 gt. According to a document received from the National Archives of Norway, Buccaneer arrived Gothenburg from Houston at the end of March-1940, having left Houston on March 7. She was still in Sweden when the Germans invaded Norway on Apr. 9 that year.

This was one of the well known so called "Kvarstad-ships" that attempted to break out of Sweden on March 31/April 1-1942 following a long court case there. Only 2 out of a total of 10 ships involved managed to reach their destination ("Operation Performance", Sir George Binney). Please go to my page Kvarstad Ships & Men for background facts and details on the breakout and all ships involved, with a crew list for each ship as well as info on their fate.

The book "Damp - Dampskipets æra i Vestfold" mentions a steamship named Bucaneer (spelling it with 1 c, presumably a much earlier ship), managed by Ohlsen & Blom, Fredriksværn - no further info on this vessel.

Robert Cressman, "The Official Chronology of the U.S. Navyin World War II" (see link to "Hyperwar" below) has an entry for Sept. 12-1941 which says that "Coast Guard cutter Northland, assisted by cutter North Star, seized Norwegian trawler Buskoe in MacKenzie Bay, Greenland, thwarting Buskoe's mission of establishing and servicing German radio weather stations in that region. This is the first capture of a belligerent ship by U.S. naval forces in World War II". This would indicate that Buskø was under German control, yet my Norwegian sources have her listed as included in Nortraship's fleet (unless Cressman's text refers to another ship?).

USS Northland - Scroll down towards the end of the page for a description of events involving Northland and Buskø (this is the U.S. Coast Guard's site, which has a lot of good information. It also mentions the Buskø incident at the end of this page).
This website credits the cutter Bear with the capture - scroll down to "The World at War".
