Illustrated Little Walter (Jacobs) discography (original) (raw)

title / label / notes
10 inch 78 rpm
Since this ain't no museum, my aim is not to depict actually existing specimen of 78 rpm records,
but to show the labels as pristine as workmanlike possible
even if this - in some cases - takes a whole lot of my time to photoshop process the initial data

# There are "experts" claiming - by aural evidence - that the harmonicists on "Steelin' Boogie PT. 2" might be Little Walter --- others by the same token do deny that claim!
... if it is not Robert Jenkins (who is listed as the harmonicist by all customary discographies), but Little Walter playing harmonica, what is Robert Jenkins at all doing on this recording?

- Whereas on the original session log sheet this track is listed as "untitled", "Don't Need No Horse" has been applied by Tom Swan, who compiled the Chess Vintage Series LPs in the late '60s. When Swan was reviewing LW session tapes, the rhythm of this track reminded him of the Junior Wells record "Galloping Horses & Lazy Mule" [@ youtube], so he made up the name "Don't Need No Horse" to remind him which track it was, and wrote it on the session log. When MCA/Universal finally released it many years after that [in 1992], they used the title Swan came up with. [Scott Dirks @ facebook]

"This EP [and others] were produced in the very early 1980s by the late [Johnny] Chester Dowling who was a record dealer from North London (later Northampton). He used to use Scandinavian red-herrings on his labels to throw the copyright police off his trail, as Scandinavian copyright law allowed anything pre-1970 to be used without licence."
