JIMMY REED and His Trio

- High And Lonesome (VJ53-104) # @ youtube
- Roll And Rhumba (VJ53-107) (instr) @ youtube

rec. poss. June 6, 1953 at Universal Studios in Chicago, IL; Mathis Jimmy Reed, hca, # voc; John Brim, g; b; Albert King or Morris Wilkerson, dr

Bob Eagle: "Morris Wilkerson is unknown to discography apart from Reed's first session. I believe his name comes from the VJ files and that Albert [King]'s supposed presence on the first session comes from some later interview with Albert. On that basis, I suggest that Wilkerson is correct for the first session. Morris was born near Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1925 and was based at Gary, Indiana in the 1930s and again for at least a decade from 1948. He was later at Chesterton, IN. His occupation was usually mechanic, or polisher, so his flirtation with being a musician may have been very brief."

Bruce Roberts: "Chance was not an affiliate of Vee Jay. It was a separate company that was already established when Vee Jay started. Jimmy's first record was on Vee Jay first, but was leased to Chance who also issued it."

The Chance Label discography: "[Art] Sheridan [...] began working with Vee-Jay Records, which had just set up shop and had two releases, one by the the doowop group the Spaniels and one by the bluesman Jimmy Reed. The company was owned by two neophytes, Jimmy Bracken and Vivian Carter, who had no distribution and little knowledge of the business. When the Spaniels' record, 'Baby It's You,' started generating interest, Chance picked it up for national distribution and it became a top ten R&B record. [...] The Jimmy Reed disk, 'High and Lonesome' b/w 'Roll and Rhumba,' also saw some local action, and picked up national sales as well from Chance distribution. Thereafter, Sheridan and Abner worked closely with Vee-Jay in getting it off the ground. However, Vee-Jay would continue to be little more than a mom and pop operation through the first half of 1954."

Vee-Jay LP 1022 (US 7/1960) first pressing, has a thin silver line around the perimeter of the label
contrary to: https://www.bsnpubs.com/veejay/veejay100-1070.html: "The first variation of this label (at far left) was used on LP-101 and LPs 1001-1015, and possibly on LP-1016."

Vee-Jay LP 1022 (US 1960?) second pressing, has a much thicker silver band around the edge of the label, and the words "TRADE MARK REG." appear under the "Vee-" in the logo, just above the wavy line

Vee-Jay VJLP 1022 (US 196? repress) "oval label", has a "rainbow" band of green fading to yellow fading to orange fading to blue and back to green around the perimeter of the label

Some of the "Vee Jay LP 1067" LPs have a factory-placed sticker at the top of the front cover with the word "STEREO", but this is nevertheless not a stereo record!
The real stereo issue "Vee Jay SR 1067" has written "STEREOPHONIC" at the top of the front cover!
All three versions, "Vee Jay LP 1067" (mono), "Vee Jay LP 1067" (false "STEREO") and "Vee Jay SR 1067" (stereo) mostly have the same "VJLP 1067" imprint on their labels, be they the original label (black with "rainbow-band"), black, or red labels
At least some of the stereo issues ("Vee Jay SR 1067") were pressed using the mono master for side one!

notes by Pete Welding

Vee-Jay LP/VJLP 1067 (1963 mono) (same back cover as on the (false) "STEREO" and the "STEREOPHONIC" release!

Will be completed and expanded with further details !!!

I herewith confess
that I - at this moment - do not have the ambition to list each and every CD anthology / compilation
containing Jimmy Reed tracks !!!

If I forgot to include anything of special significance (e.g. albums including previously unissued tracks
or remasterings crucially increasing its sound quality) --- just give me a sign!!!
