Resistance to Occupation

Note: On 30 Sep 1940, the Danish Council (Danske Rd) was formed in London by activist Danes, including Danish seamen who had joined the Allies, it later supported the activities of the Danish Free Council. The Danish Freedom Council (Danmarks Frihedsrd)was the closest that Denmark came to an alternative government during the German occupation. It was formed to coordinate the various resistance groups' work against the occupation. Erling Foss, Mogens Fog, Frode Jakobsen and Volmer Gyth formed the council on 16 Sep 1943. There was no formal council chairman. The Council dissolved on 13 Jul 1945 and was replaced by the Freedom Movement Consultation (Frihedsbevgelsens Samrd), which dissolved 1 Oct 1946. The Danish Freedom Council members were announced after liberation:

Prime Minister Scavenius and his government laid down their functions 29 Aug 1943. From then the Germans governed Denmark alone. However, Scavenius and his government constitutionally still were Denmark's government until 5 May 1945. After the resignation of Scavenius, the government was administered informally by the department heads (Departementschefstyret) Andreas Mller (b. 1882 - d. 1954), Chief of staff in department of the Prime minister, and Nils Thomas Svenningsen (b. 1894 - d. 1985), Director in theministry of Foreign Affairs.

External resistance against the Germans started immediately in 1940, the Danish diplomatic representatives abroad refusing to recognize the new situation created by the occupation. The most important among them was Henrik Kauffmann (b. 1888 - d. 1963), the Minister to the U.S., who, on 9 Apr 1941, placed Greenland under American protection. On 30 Sep 1940, the Danish Council was formed by activist Danes in London, including Danish seamen, who had joined the Allied, it later supported the activities of the Danish Free Council.
