895 Magyar (Hungarians) migrations into the area begin.
1070 - 1170 Transylvania progressively attached to the Hungarian kingdom.
1176 First governor with the stylevoivode - vajda (in Hungarian) or
voyvoda(in Latin) recorded; this later style becomes standard.
1176 - 1526 A political structure emerges in which the v ajda, appointed
by the Hungarian king, becomes progressively autonomous
and an increasingly powerful diet is formed in which the
"three nations" - Magyars, Szklers, and Saxons - are
represented; the Magyars (Hungarians) include most of the
nobility; the Szklers, although ethnically related to the
Magyars, are of debated origins; the Saxons are the descendants
of the German settlers; the Romanian (mostly peasant) population
had no political participation.
1211 - Aug 1225 German Teutonic Order (Deutscher Orden) is asked to colonize and
Christianize the area by the Hungarian kings, their colony is
based in Kronstadt (modern Braşov). The German name for
Transylvania - Siebenbrgen ("seven fortresses") is derived
from the Saxons' seven cities in the region.
Apr 1241 - 1243 Mongol army invades, then withdraws.
29 Feb 1528 - 26 Jan 1699 Transylvania under suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire.
24 Feb 1538 Hungarian civil war terminated by the Treaty of Nagyvrad
(or Grosswardein), both parties (Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand I
and former voivode of Transylvania JnosSzpolyai or Zpolyai)
are recognized and both keep the title "king of Hungary" and
their current territories (Szpolyai in eastern and Ferdinand in
western or royal Hungary), the potential Szpolyai heir becomes
a "duke" only (peace ratified 10 Jun 1538).
22 Jul 1540 Jnos Zsigmond Szpolyai (or Zpolyai), inherits his father's
claim to the crown of Hungary (in contention with Ferdinand I of
Austria). Contrary to 1538 agreement Jnos is subsequently
elected king of Hungary as Jnos II, with his mother Izabela as
regent, however he remains uncrowned.
29 Aug 1541 Ottoman rule in Buda (Ofen) by submission. Danube/Tisza becomes an
Ottoman province, the Ottoman intervention reduces the Habsburg
sphere and the area beyond Tisza River remains under Transylvania
rule under Jnos II (in opposition to Ferdinand).
29 Dec 1541 Hungary to be reunited under Habsburg dynasty, agreement is voided
on 20 Dec 1542 by the Diet of Transylvania.
19 Jul 1551 - 22 Oct 1556 Earlier agreements for reunification with royal Hungary implemented
16 Aug 1570 Jnos Zsigmond Szpolyai, keeps the of title king-elect of Hungary
for life, but his successors are to be styled "Princes of
Transylvania" (Erdlyi Fejedelem) by the Treaty of Speyer.
