- 24th independent Tank Battalion (Primerwalde, East Germany) - equipped with T-54
- 45th independent Tank Battalion (Wustrow, East Germany) - equipped with T-54
- 46th independent Tank Battalion (Wustrow, East Germany) - equipped with T-54
- 58th independent Tank Battalion (Garz (Usedom), East Germany) - equipped with T-54
- 22nd independent Motorised Rifle Battalion (Primerwalde, East Germany) - equipped with BTR-152
Tasked with protection of the Baltic coastline.
In 1980 renamed 138th independent Tank Regiment - the 24th, 45th and 58th independent Tank Battalions were transferred to Mongolia (12th,41st and 91stMotorised Rifle Divisions), while the 46th independent Tank Battalion and 22nd independent Motorised Rifle Battalion was disbanded.
The regiment was re-equipped with T-55 and T-62 tanks, and BTR-60 armored personnel carriers - new task was now to parachute and air-land into Denmark.
