However, to integrate such areas into city space management with consideration of nature conservation aspects, a sound assessment of their ecological potential is necessary. The aim of this paper was to analyze whether carabid beetle assemblages of the wastelands are affected by soil parameters, particularly trace element contamination. Therefore, we studied the carabid fauna in relation to selected soil parameters on 56 sampling plots situated in 24 wastelands located in the city of Warsaw (Poland). The results have confirmed our assumptions that the number of species, as well as the number of individual carabid beetles, are negatively affected by an increasing amount of pollutants in the soil. Particularly, the trace elements Pb, Cu, and Cd showed a significantly negative impact. The results are of value when it comes to the use of urban wastelands in the context of sustainable city development. Future use of urban wasteland...

Research paper thumbnail of Influence of Defensive Work on City Landscape Shaping – Warsaw Fortress System Case Study

Information on the characteristics of the fortified landscape was presented, with particular reference to one of the types of fortifications – the ring fortress. A very important element was to trace the history of this object and its changes in the last 150 years. Individual objects characterized by interesting architecture, terrain and interesting vegetation perform different functions in the city landscape. These functions result primarily from the different use of objects. It is also evident that these objects in the future may also develop as a result of adaptation to new purposes or use. They have a very large spatial and natural potential.

Crataegus kind next to Rosa, Rubus, Salix, Populus or Alchemilla kinds represents group of plants commonly occurring in country fl ora. It is distinguished by exceptional feature of alternation and complicated phylogenetic relations. The reason of high measure of polymorphism is crossing ability occurrence, polyploids and apomix. Simultaneously so many natural hybrids and taxons of lower standing makes a barrier for traditional taxonomic implements. All efforts to devise methods of systematic with classic morphological methods, usually prepared at the same time by a few researchers, resulted in listing great amount of taxons (from 150 to 1200). Singular taxons are put in different rank. It is proved by works of Christensen and others. The main aim of this thesis was to create directives for landscape gardening in the area of Warmia and Mazury, based on the symbolic meaning of plants. The thesis research involved becoming familiar with literature concerning the meaning of plants as well as fi eld works, which consisted of conducting an opinion poll among the inhabitants of selected places in the Warmia and Mazury region. The questionnaires concerned 36 species of trees and shrubs, most of which are indigenous in the area. It showed which species were used in sacral space and which in living space. It also presented which of the selected species are still used today in the Warmia and Mazury area. Directives for landscape gardening in the park area were created.

The main reason for the loss of quality is that the fruit softens too quickly, but storage at low temperatures (0–1 °C) is not effective enough in maintaining high fruit quality. Two cultivars were evaluated for storage quality, i.e., ‘Geneva’ and ‘Ananasnaya’. Minikiwi were harvested at two stages of maturity. The fruit were treated with 1-methylcyclopropene at a concentration of 0.65 µL/L and then stored under common cold storage, ULO, and CA conditions. Fruit evaluation was carried out for 12 weeks, and firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity were evaluated. Post-harvest treatments, as well as the conditions under which the fruit is stored, determine its quality after storage. The application of 1-MCP decisively inhibits the softening of mini kiwi even under normal atmospheric conditions.

Prolonging the availability of minikiwi can be provided by different storage technologies. This experiment focused on evaluating the effect of various O2 and CO2 concentrations, i.e., low-oxygen atmosphere (DCA, 0.4% CO2:0.4% O2; ULO, 1.5% CO2:1.5% O2) or high-CO2 (CA, 5% CO2:1.5% O2) storage, in order to provide the consumer with fruits with comparable high nutritional values. Evaluation gave the basic characteristics of the fruits that characterize their health-promoting properties, i.e., total polyphenols (TPC), phenolic acids and flavonols, antioxidant activity (AA), monosaccharides, and acid content. The atmosphere with a higher CO2 content of 5% (CA) effectively influenced the high value of ascorbic acid even after 12 weeks of storage. DCA technology contributed to a significant inhibition of phenol loss but not as effectively as C...

Research paper thumbnail of Shaping the Landscape of Rural Communes in the Aspect of Green Infrastructure Creation

Barometr Regionalny, 2015

This is strictly connected and correlated with the planning of land use and spatial management. The obligation of green structure creation has a legal basis (the State, European Union and international levels), EU development and conservation strategies and adaptation planes for climate change such as transition to a green economy. The aim was to present the needs and special approach, called the method of "ecological truss," to landscape green structure planning in rural areas in central Poland, in Tarłów Commune, creating better possibilities to reconcile nature and biodiversity protection with land use and economic management. Creating rich green infrastructure leads to "ecologisation" of the whole area and greater harmony of landscape. It supports strong opportunities and decreases endangerments indicated in documents of local development plans. Rich green infrastructure is a tool to approach closer sustainable development and give a significant chance, especially in peripheral and underdeveloped areas, for better living conditions for local people based on permanent use of natural and cultural values of the landscape rather than degrading them.
