If Apple had 90% of the market share, all you Apple fanboys would be Microsoft nerds. Don't give me that crap about usability and security. Same for Linux geeks). Microsoft has a reputable OS, and if it were really terrible, it would have kicked the bucket by now. There's a reason they have most of the market share.But I'll admit, there are features on other OSs UI that I like and would like to have on Windows, but not losing any particular Windows quality. I mean, the interface for Windows has been more or less the same since Windows 95.I'm particularly talking about Mac OS X's dock. Or, specifically, I like the idea. The dock is really a problem for me. I used a Mac a few times, and the dock just got in the way of the applications I was trying to run. Still, the idea of not having to go to the desktop when I want to open something is great. (Windows' quick launch really isn't that great.)So, for the last hour or so, I spent my time designing a new UI for Windows.( My designCollapse )This is just a simple blueprint of what I imagined, so I used the Windows Classic theme. For the tiny icons, I used the icons that appear in the left hand corner of the window. This would look best in a more modern theme, like Vista. I also imagine the icons being bigger to take up space, and getting smaller when more space is used. But, again this is just a blueprint.So, what are we seeing here? Well, we obviously have the Windows menu, which will serve it's basic functions. Then we have the taskbar icons. They will service like the icons on the desktop: you double click them, they open. When an application is open, they are added to the box you see on the right, which is for programs that are opened. When you minimize an application, you can reopen it by clicking it's icon in that box.So, with this, what about the desktop? You can add widgets to it, or add whatever kind of eye candy you desire.Well, that's my blueprint. (And I emphasize "blueprint". Don't give me crap saying that "why are you choosing it to look like boring Windows 98?".) Well, for some reason when I reinstalled Windows XP our DVD drives are not being recognized... and for some reason it is recognizing a non-existant floppy drive...What the hell is going on here? But the program does not display the language correctly, just lines and lines of question marks.1) Example: "????, ???????. ???????."I have tried changing regional options and installing chinese GB18030 support and adding additional Fonts. Nothing works.I have a windows 2000. (no language bar and cannot install language packs because windows 2000 has a built in east asian language support program)Richwin and NJStar only display chinese correclty within Start - Programs and reading chinese documents, and not display correctly within the program window.2) Error message "created for a language not supported by your version of windows" --- is there some way that I can override this without reinstalling or switching to a different language OS (can I do it without installing Windows 2000 Chinese version in addition to my current OS)?Thank You! It has batteries, and I assume they work because the light on the top of it comes on when I turn the mouse on (there is a switch on the bottom).However, the computer doesn't seem to recognize that the mouse exists. It didn't come with any software and if it came with instructions, I didn't get any. What should I/can I do? DO I need to change my set up somewhere?It is a "targus" mouse from best buy. thanks! I want to give him a list of things I'm looking for in a computer, and since I don't really know what I'm talking about, I was wondering if someone could read over it and tell me whether it all even makes any sense. Or possibly make some recommendations. I'm not obsessed with gaming or anything but do play often, and other than that just use it for the internet, downloading music, burning cd's etc. Nothing too fancy. So heres my list. Help would be much appreciated. Some of this stuff is just adapted from the system requirements of some games I have (unsuccessfully) tried to play on my current (very old) computer. And other stuff I've adapted from looking online at computers and prices. So again.. please correct me if I'm not making sense.. Windows XP. I know very little about computers and desperately need some help.My printer (an hp deskjet 5100) has stopped working. I send things to print and nothing happens. I call up the list of print jobs and it says "printer offline." I look at the printer and the light isn't on. I check the connecting cable, fine. I unplug the printer and plug it back in. I turn the laptop off and then on again. I check the printer in the other USB ports to check it's nothing wrong with them. Basically I do everything that people who know nothing about computers do. Still the laptop and printer won't recognise each other. I don't think there's a loose connection anywhere. Not long beforethis happened I clicked "Yes" to the computer asking me if I wanted to auto update my HP software. Could this be the cause of all this? Specifically, I want to create a system that allows visitors to my website to send email messages to third parties using their own email address with one-click. I heard that this is a questionable practice, used by spammers, no less--but I've seen it used also on a lot of legitimate websites, which usually encourage you to fill in your name and emaill address and click to send a prewritten text to a government official. You'd have to rig up the protocols of the email server to accept sending email to third parties, right? I have no problem setting up the form itself, but am confused about these two things: 1) how to rig up an email server to send email from a different email account (and not just one time only!) and 2) how to relay the information a visitor types from the website to the email server. (I guess I need to use something like asp to sort that out?) At any rate, please help! If this is not the right forum, can anyone direct me to a forum where I can pose this question????Thank you!!! Even if it's not the reason, it's pretty damn annoying.Take for instance: http://www.tepeyac.org.ns50.alentus.com/inicio.asp?lan=engThe sidebar looks all messy when you open it in Firefox. But the same site looks ok on Internet Explorer and I don't know how it looks on Safari. Is there something else going on there that conspires against Firefox users? We reloaded Windows XP with our Windows XP disc and now it is asking to activate it within 7 days (it counts down from 30 days). We have a product key, but no COA (Certificate of Authenticity). We type in our product key, and it says it is invalid and I think it may be because we used the same product key on 2 of our other computers. I have looked EVERYWHERE for product keys/product key generators but nothing works.I am broke, and can't afford to spend 170−170-170−300 on a new version of Windows XP with a product key. I was wondering if any of you knew of a reliable source so that I can get a product key and not lose an arm and a leg in the process.anywhere but phazeddl.com would do.
