Research paper thumbnail of Analysis of an Underground Structure Settlement Risk Due to Tunneling- A Case Study from Tabriz, Iran

Too little distance between the tunnel crown and the underground structure foundation will probably cause collapse or excessive settlement during the tunnel construction based on studied geotechnical conditions of the region. In this paper, a method of risk level assessment for various types of structures, such as frame and masonry structures, and various types of foundation, such as continuous and isolated, is well defined and the risk level is classified. Moreover, the value of the underground commercial center structure settlement is estimated using both empirical and numerical methods. The settlement risk level of the commercial center structure is determined based on presented definitions about risk classification of various types of structures. Consequently, tunneling processes in this section need a special monitoring system and consolidation measures before the passage of a tunnel boring machine.

Short distance between tunnel crown and underground market foundation will probably cause collapses or excessive settlements during tunnel construction based on conducted investigations into geotechnical conditions of the region. Using finite element method, the quantity of underground market foundation settlement is estimated in this paper.

Spatial correlation length can be an important factor in reliability analysis of geotechnical systems, yet it is rarely estimated during routine site investigations. Results from two different sites in the north of Denmark are reported in this paper, indicating quite strong anisotropy due to the depositional process, with significantly shorter spatial correlation lengths in the vertical direction. It is observed that the normalized cone resistance is a better estimator of spatial trends than the normalized friction ratio.

In an attempt to understand this complex behavior, an experimental investigation program has been carried out on uplift resistance of buried pipes. In this research, a new laboratory model is developed. Several tests have been performed by utilizing this laboratory model. Uplift forces due to raising water table causes the initiation of failure. Based on the data obtained two mechanisms are presented. Mechanism of type one in which a sliding block with angled planes occurs in small displacements and in dense soil, and a mechanism of type two, circulation mechanism associated to soil flow under the pipe occurs in large displacement for dense soil and by continuing of loading and the soil around the pipe flows circularly. Even though the load-applying system is completely different than earlier studies, evidences found by this research are consistent with the previous research.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of soil liquefaction potential based on numerical method- a case study of an urban railway project

A number of approaches to evaluate the potential for initiation of liquefaction, such as Seed and Idriss simplified method have been developed over the years. Although simplified methods are available in calculating the liquefaction potential of a soil deposit and shear stresses induced at any point in the ground due to earthquake loading, these methods cannot be applied to all earthquakes with the same accuracy, also they lack the potential to predict the pore pressure developed in the soil. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a ground response analysis to obtain pore pressures and shear stresses in the soil due to earthquake loading. Using soil historical, geological and compositional criteria, a zone of the corridor of Tabriz urban railway line 2 susceptible to liquefaction was recognized. Then, using numerical analysis and cyclic stress method using QUAKE/W finite element code, soil liquefaction potential in susceptible zone was evaluated based on design earthquake.
