A literature review provides a theoretical framework and builds background knowledge for three explorative case studies. These practice-led case studies gradually increase the user-involvement in sustainable consumption behaviour. Each case study elaborates a particular research question, evaluating the opportunities to change consumer behaviour with a different design approach. The case studies build upon one another, thus the third case study is discussed in most detail. Selected findings from these three case studies provide an insight to the possibilities of design for person-product attachment with participatory design concepts like 'half-way products': design objects which are intentionally 'unfinished'. The conclusion drawn is that designers can enable a joyful participation in clothes making, for example with half-way products, and thus foster a stronger emotional value towards garments. This emotional value is likely to facilitate a stronger person-product attachment and encourage longer lasting products. Additionally, the research shows that the participatory design concept – 'half-way product' was very much appreciated. The study concludes with possible future prospects. "

It shows the creative processes and tools for designing positive societal transitions. These transitions are revealed by showing the new hybrid relationships being forged between alternative approaches to learning, living, making, socialising, thinking and working. Agents of Alternatives enables professionals, amateurs and citizens to understand the rich possibilities of creating and designing together in open, participatory and imaginative ways. It provides an integrated and systemic collection of case studies, essays and interviews from well-known international contributors and local activists, collated by an international team of editors.

The paper provides an insight into the broad opportunities of fashion activism for designers. As the basis for discussion and evaluation of the research questions, the author has compared the applicability of the bespoken strategies with selected findings from her own empirical case study. The case study entails two participatory clothing design workshops with 'half-way' products. The main research question elaborates on whether fashion activism can be considered as a tool for designers to help consumers defeat their desire to constantly consume more. This involves three sub-questions. First, how effective is fashion activism as a tool in raising awareness for sustainability issues in the fashion industry? Secondly, do participatory design processes and enabling solutions help the consumer gain new skills and develop a greater appreciation to...

The spectral behaviors and timing properties of the QPO have been studied since its discovery. We present an analysis of the QPO in RE J1034+396 based on the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). Comparing other time-frequency analysis methods, the Hilbert spectrum reveals the variation of the QPO period in great detail. Furthermore, the empirical mode decomposition provides bandpass filtered data that can be used in the O-C and correlation analysis. We suggest that it is better to divide the evolution of the QPO in this observation into three epochs according to their different periodicities. In addition to the periodicities, the correlations between the QPO periods and corresponding mean count rates are also different in these three epochs. Further examining the phase lags in these epochs, we found no significant phase lags between the soft and hard X-ray bands, which is also confirmed in the QPO phase-resolved spectral analysis. Finally, we discuss the indications of current models including a spotted accretion disk, diskoseismology, and oscillation of shock, according to the observed time-frequency and spectral behaviors.

This is particularly relevant for matters of participation in extended participatory design (PD) contexts that grow in scope and time span, such as in peer production communities. However, relatively little PD research has been devoted to the relation between skills and participation. Using a case rich in practice, a co-sewing café, this paper aims to understand the spectrum of participation by deeply examining the diversity and interrelation of the skills the participants practised in the café. To analyse the case, the paper compiles a tentative analytical framework based on PD and peer production literature. I ran and documented this 'research through design' experiment over eighteen months, hosting hundreds of participants. The diversity of the participants' skills was elucidated through the rich materials from the practice and then placed along a learning spectrum of skilful participation. The paper concludes with an overview of the different skills practiced and developed in the café and suggests that designing for skill development can contribute to sustaining participation in such contexts.

Sustainability issues are challenging to communicate through course content alone. Against this background, the concept of fashion libraries (FLs) was introduced to adolescents at a non-denominational school in a small German city. The purpose was to explore whether the students’ attitudes would change over time in response to distinct interventions and project-based learning, such as the foundation of an FL, upcycling workshops and lectures on sustainability. The sample comprised 10 female adolescents in the age between 13 and 16 years, who volunteered to participate in the clothing library project. An exploratory mixed-methods approach, including a questionnaire, two interventions and pre-and post-intervention in-depth interviews, was utilized. The findings hint at an incremental change in the students’ attitudes towards an appreciation of garments and a change in behaviour. They started to reflect t...

Through this participatory action research project, it emerged that the process of bringing together diverse locals in a makerspace can help generating different clothing concepts, and that these concepts can bring about different value propositions for local clothes production. The comprehensive Compobast Fibres guide is here for all sustainable designers who are in search of information and guidance through the world of old-new materials. We would like to bring you a resource you can glide through with ease and comfort, finding all the information needed for your environmental and sustainable practices and design criteria. This guide aims to introduce product and fashion designers to the idea of “the composite” as a structural, shapable material, useful for producing both flat and organic forms, and to suggest possibilities for replacing conventional fibers with natural fibers and biopolymers. Our experiments are by no means comprehensive, as material science in this area is relatively new and samples of the polymers expensive and challenging to use in our conventional workshop setting. Having said that, we feel it is important for designers to jump on board and start experimenting in this area, and join in the conversation about bio-composites and bio-plastics. Designers’ formgiving knowledge, plus a willingness to conduct creative hands-on trials, is a valuable contribution to the field. It can support and even direct material scientists toward developing the most useful materials.
