Research paper thumbnail of Stochastic Dynamic Programming for Three-Echelon Inventory System of Limited Shelf Life Products

Products with limited shelf life impose additional challenges in managing the inventory across the supply chain because of the additional wastage costs incurred in case of being stored beyond product's useful life. This paper presents a stochastic dynamic programming model for inventory replenishment in a serial multi-echelon distribution supply chain. The model considers uncertain stationary discrete demand at the retailer and zero lead time. The objective is to minimize expected total costs across the supply chain echelons, while maintaining a preset service level. The results illustrate that a cost saving of around 17% is achievable due to coordinating inventory decisions across the supply chain.

Legislation, environmental consciousness, take-back policy, warranty returns, and economic aspects are some of these reasons. The majority of publications in the field of reverse logistics are case studies. Yet, there is still a need for structuring the field and creating a general framework for the issues involved in reverse logistics. Network design taking the objective of achieving sustainability into consideration is one of the challenges industry is facing recently. The design of the distribution and reverse logistics network has to fulfill the different objectives from the economic, social, and environmental perspective. In addition to the multi-criteria nature of the problem it is characterized by a high degree of uncertainty concerning the quantity, quality, and timing of returned products. In this paper a review of the modeling and solution methodologies in the field of reverse logistics network design is presented and analyzed."

Research paper thumbnail of A Mathematical Programming Approach to the Optimal Sustainable Product Mix for the Process Industry

Sustainability, 2015

Manufacturing operations are frequently considered to have an adverse effect on the environment. Hence, the sustainable operation of manufacturing facilities is a vital practice to ensure sustainability. The aim of this paper is to find the optimum product mix of a manufacturing facility to maximize its sustainability. A mixed integer non-linear programming model is developed to specify the product mix in order to maximize a proposed sustainability index (SI) of a manufacturing facility. The sustainability index comprises the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainability in a weighted form using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The model results allow the identification of the prospective improvements of manufacturing sustainability.

In this paper a lexicographic integer linear goal programming (ILGP) model is developed to design a multi-commodity recovery network for products of modular structure. The model results in locating facilities in a multi-echelon network and assigning the products to the different end of life (EOL) options.

A lexicographic mixed integer goal programming approach is proposed for modelling the problem. The deliverables of the proposed mathematical model include: locations for the different facilities and the amount to be allocated to the different End of Life (EOL) options.
