Cooks and bakers rely on it for baking and for soup thickener but in dentistry the appropriate mixture in weight and volume of starch, water, glycerin and ethyl alcohol forms separating medium. A separating medium prevents direct contact between the denture based resin and the model surface. This study aimed at production of dental separating medium using tapioca extracted from Manihot exculenta in Enugu, Nigeria. The research was carried out between August and September, 2018 in Enugu, Nigeria. The study adopted a three phased experimental approach using the same procedures but different weight and volume compositions. Structured, pretested Product Evaluation Data Sheet was used to evaluate the product by selected Practicing Dental Technologists in Enugu State, Nigeria. The resultant separating medium from experiment III with the following composition: starch flour 1200g, glycerin 500ml, ethyl alcohol 500ml, colorant 500ml and 4000ml of distilled (hot and cold) water. There was significant agreement among the respondents in the flow ability of the product 8(40%); excellent product effectiveness 8 (40%); smoothness 8 (40%), and color stability of the product 10 (50%). These findings suggests that dental separating medium can be produced locally in Enugu, Nigeria. Therefore, more attention needs to be paid in the production process, which will facilitate easy practice of Dental Technology, and also conserve huge foreign exchange being spent in the importation of separating medium in Nigeria.

While focus is more on the development of a vaccine, less attention has been paid on the extent to which such vaccines could be well accepted and the readiness among caregivers to comply with its use in order to achieve the effectiveness of the vaccine in the malaria endemic areas. Compliance rates are influenced by the level of awareness, as well as the perception of the population. This cross-sectional study was aimed at assessing the awareness, perceptions and intent to comply with the prospective malaria vaccine by caregivers in Owerri West, South Eastern Nigeria. Methods: Structured pretested questionnaires were used to collect data from 500 randomly selected consenting care givers (mostly mothers). Items used to assess the intent to comply with the vaccine include willingness to accept and use the vaccine, and allow children to be vaccinated. Results: The study found that awareness of malaria as a public health problem was high (89.8%), but awareness about a prospective malaria vaccine was not high (48.2%). Up to 88.2% of respondents showed positive perception towards the vaccine, of which 65.2% had strong positive perception. The study found high level of intent to comply with the prospective malaria vaccine among the study group (95.6% positive). Significant association was established between caregivers perception and intent to comply with the prospective malaria vaccine (χ 2 = 144.52; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: While malaria vaccine adoption is likely to be a welcome development in South Eastern Nigeria, proper consideration should be given to factors that are likely to influence people's perceptions about vaccines in the plans/ process of malaria vaccine development and vaccination programmes.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a colourless, inflammable liquid with an acrid fruity odour. The tox... more Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a colourless, inflammable liquid with an acrid fruity odour. The toxicity of MMA is described as acute and chronic in nature. Inhalation for short periods causes slight dose-dependent irritation of the upper respiratory passages and of the eyes. This review aims to evaluate the toxicity and hazardous effects of MMA monomer on practicing Dental Technologists in Nigeria. Many literatures were reviewed as structured and conscious internet searchs were used to validate findings. It was found that after higher doses, narcotic effects, Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders and depression results from inhalation as most important exposure route of MMA monomer. However, experimentally, short-term oral or intra peritoneal administration of MMA to animals results in essentially the same dose-dependent systemic toxic effects as does inhalative and intravenous administration. The effects of MMA monomer in man results in acute intoxication which is occupationally described as mild and reversible. Depending on the exposure concentration, it manifests itself as acute and chronic health effects. In acute stage, variously severe irritation of the mucosa of the upper respiratory passages and the eyes and as subjective symptoms such as headache, nausea and lack of appetite, difficulty in concentrations and reduced memory occurs. The damages of the nervous system, developing fetus, nervous system causing numbness or weakness of the hands and genetic changes (mutation) are signs of chronic health effects of MMA monomer. It is concluded that continues exposure to MMA monomer during various dental procedures at an unventilated Dental laboratory environment without appropriate protection gear mainly produce toxic and hazardous conditions, including burning sensations, eye pain and may lead to loss of memories. These findings therefore have provided possible guidelines for proper education, awareness of workplace controls and practices and thus the need for frequent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by practicing Dental technologists.

It was found that most of the respondents were females (58%), most were in age group (26-36yrs) 40%, majority of the respondents were married (53%), by religion most were protestant (39%), by tribe majority were Mutooro (53%), most of the respondent were illiterate (37%), by occupation majority were peasant farmer 78 (50%), most of the respondent has less than 5 children (80%) and majority were from fort portal municipality (35%) respectively. It was equally found that there was a significant relationships between age, marital status and level of education, where psychological disorder were most common among female with depression 22, anxiety 16, grief 9 and dementia 4, depression is most common in age group of 16-25yrs and 26-35yrs with 11 respectively, depression is mostly among married client 17 (45%) followed by single 12 (31%). These findings suggests that more attention needs to be paid to these disorders, particularly in the light of literature demonstrating the impact of mental disorders, especially depression and anxiety, on disease progression and adherence to antiretroviral medication and formation of liason in management of HIV/AIDs and psychological disorders or to generate a joint treatment plan.

It is used to prepare patterns for gold or other metallic materials in the fabrication of inlays, crowns and bridges. Inlay wax is used for the same purpose as casting wax in the formation of pattern mostly for metallic casting in Dental technology. This study aimed at producing dental inlay wax using locally sourced materials in Enugu, Nigeria. The research was carried out between July to September, 2018 in Enugu, Nigeria. The study adopted a three phased experimental approach using the same procedures but different weight compositions. Structured, pretested Product Evaluation Data Sheet was used to evaluate the product by selected Practicing Dental Technologists in Enugu State, Nigeria. The resultant wax from experiment III with the following composition: 60g Paraffin wax, 5g Beeswax, 25g Carnauba wax, 10g Ceresin wax and (35g) of green ketchup colorant gave the best result. Its properties are comparable to the conventional Dental Inlay wax. There was significant agreement among the respondents in the smoothness of the product (40%); excellent dimensional stability and product effectiveness (40%); flow and burnout of the product (35%), and color stability of the product (45%). These findings suggests that dental inlay waxes can be produced locally in Enugu, Nigeria. Therefore, more attention needs to be paid in the production process, which will facilitate easy practice of Dental Technology, and also conserve huge foreign exchange being spent in the importation of inlay wax in Nigeria.
