In this paper, we focus on trends in service adoption, by discussing the development in the Finnish telecommunication market and trends in actual and future user behaviour with regard to three groups of mobile services. Based on surveys from 2004, 2005 and 2006, in which the same concepts were measured, we test models in which concepts like innovativeness, flexibility, status and entertainment value are related to mobile travel service, traditional entertainment and mobile Internet services. Our analysis shows that we cannot understand the actual and future use unless we take the characteristics and user values of the specific mobile services into account.

Simple in design, easy to adapt and effortless to employ it rapidly became a profitable, matchless, globally used mobile service – referred to as a “killer application”. Ever since the quest for the next mobile service “killer application” has continued. Year after year the mobile service market(s) produce(s) new services and applications that due to complexity or lack of relevance fail to meet the consumers’ expectations. In this paper we will discuss three mobile services that commonly have been described as promising and innovative: mobile games, mobile television and snapshots with mobile phones, in an attempt to understand their potential for becoming successful services. We will study the Finnish mobile services market from two different viewpoints: on the one hand what Finnish experts and professionals on mobile commerce think the consumers want, and on the other ...

To find an explanation, we formulated propositions, moving from a macro-economic view on innovation, via innovation strategies to explanations that focus on the design of the artefact and the supporting business models. We concluded that, in the design process,

The adoption of new mobile services contradicts this proposition as it has been much slower than expected. Basic services such as search for information, ring tones, and icons and logos are still the most popular services. Based on our empirical evidence from a survey conducted in Finland, we can state that ownership of technologically advanced mobile phones encourages users to try out new services, but the adoption rate of them is nowhere close to SMS, which still reaches a much wider audience.

The early mobile commerce hype was based on search for "killer applications", i.e. mobile services which would launch the field and ensure rapid and profitable growth of mobile technology applications. We have studied how consumers pick up the use of mobile services by comparing the results from two studies of the Finnish consumer market for mobile services. We have tried to describe, what are the determinants of service adoption and the patterns of adoption that we can observe. The approach is straightforward: first we work through a theoretical background of the adoption of innovations, and then we search for explanations for the patterns of adoption. In conclusion, we will assess some steps in the future adoption of mobile services.
