The Jim Haberl Hut was built on site by the ACC, along with Jim’s family and friends, during the summer of 2005 and spring of 2006. Prefabrication of the hut frame was completed with assistance from the 192nd Airfield Engineers in summer 2004. The hut serves as a welcoming and comfortable base for mountaineering in the Tantalus Range. It is located at 6,800 feet elevation in the Serratus-Dione Col, approximately a 6-hour hike above Lake Lovely Water and the Tantalus Hut, within Tantalus Provincial Park at 551600 northerly/477800 easterly on map 92G/14 (Cheakamus River).

The one-storey wood hut with metal roofing and cladding features a large kitchen/sitting area, equipped with dishes, cutlery, cooking pots/pans for 12 with two 2-burner propane stoves (propane provided) and a wood burning stove (fire bricks provided). Two sleeping rooms, 6 per room with sleeping pads for 12. The hut is kept locked, with an unlocked emergency vestibule available. To ensure access to the emergency vestibule, ensure the door is always closed to prevent snow and rain entry. Use the rope to tie it shut to the railing.

Terrain & Activities

The surrounding terrain is dramatic and suited for intermediate and advanced climbers. The area offers a variety of mixed snow and rock routes of varying grades on peaks including Tantalus (2,603 m / 8,540′), Dione (2,590 m / 8,500′), Alpha (2,305 m / 7,562′), Serratus (2,326 m / 7,632′), and more. Climbing is detailed in Climbing and Hiking in Southwestern B.C. by Bruce Fairley and Alpine Select by Kevin McLane. The terrain is generally unsuitable for ski touring due to avalanche hazards; however, steep skiing and snowboarding is possible in spring for experienced parties.
