Social conflicts around religion impact more than societies and communities. They also impact organizations. 'Anti-religion' sentiments tend to be based on the perception that religion can be neatly separated from the 'more acceptable/palatable' spirituality, but this ignores the fact that - for most people - the two are intimately intertwined and inseparable. As religious identity is salient for a majority of the world's population, it is thus an important aspect of organizations - particularly those with a large and diverse body of employees. This handbook provides a timely and necessary analysis of religious diversity in organizations, investigating the role of national context, the intersections of religion with ethnicity and gender, and approaches to diversity management.

Reviews
'This important book provides a much overdue scoping review of religion at the workplace, a matter far too often overlooked. Whilst gender, sexuality, race, have by now entered mainstream diversity management, rarely does religion feature on an organization's Head of Diversity brief. This collection remedies the lack. A must read for academics and practitioners alike.'

Yochanan Altman - Middlesex University and The Open University of Hong Kong

'This book is a tour de force. Not only does the text explore myriad religions and the impact on organizations, the text also unveils the importance of understanding diversity management in very different socio-cultural and geo-political contexts. As a consequence, one is left in no doubt of the central role of religion in organizations, and everyday lives. Together with gender and race difference dimensions, religion is radically shaping not only management philosophy, but also international relations and spatial critiques of the political economy of development. In celebrating difference and diversity as part of organization and social theory, one wonders why religion has not been addressed before. This book corrects this.'

Beverly Dawn Metcalfe - American University of Beirut

'Recent terrorist attacks in several countries have tested our tolerance of religious diversity. This edited volume written by prominent diversity scholars is particularly timely in enlightening our understanding of spirituality and religion at work. The contributions touch on religious misunderstandings, discrimination, conflicts, and accommodating religious diversity in the workplace.'

Eddy Ng - F. C. Manning Chair in Economics and Business, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia

'Religious Diversity in the Workplace treads boldly where many fear to go, thoughtfully raising the role and impact of religion and growing religious diversity at work. Yet go we must, if companies want to flourish at home and abroad in today’s global marketplace. The editors and contributors offer a welcome and illuminating guided tour - for both scholars and practitioners - of a wide range of perspectives and insights into religious diversity in the workplace, and why it matters now than more than ever.'

David W. Miller - Director, Princeton University Faith and Work Initiative, and author of God at Work: the History and Promise of the Faith at Work Movement

Global leadership is an emerging area of research, with only a small but growing published literature base. More specifically, the topic of women’s advances and adventures in leading within the global context is barely covered in the existing leadership literature. Although few women are serving in global leadership roles in corporate and non-profit arenas, and as heads of nations, that number is growing (e.g., Indira Nooyi at PepsiCo, Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as president of Liberia, Angela Merkel as chancellor of Germany).

The purpose of this volume is to provide the reader with current conceptualizations and theory related to women as global leaders, recent empirical investigations of the phenomenon, analysis of effective global leadership development programs, and portraits of women who lead, or have led, in a global role. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section covers the state of women as global leaders, containing chapters by Joyce Osland and Nancy Adler, pioneers in the field of global and/or women’s leadership. The second section describes approaches to women’s global leadership. The third section offers an analysis of programs that are useful in developing women as global leaders, with the final section profiling women as global leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousfazai, and Golda Meir. As Barbara Kellerman noted in the Foreword, "this book...should be understood as a collection whose time has come, precisely because women now have opportunities to lead that are far more expansive than they were even in the recent past. Though their numbers remain low, they are able in some cases to exercise leadership not only as outsiders, but also as insiders, from the very positions of power and authority to which men forever have had access."

Heewon Chang, Faith Ngunjiri, and Kathy-Ann Hernandez break new ground on this blossoming new array of research models, collectively labeled Collaborative Autoethnography. Their book serves as a practical guide by providing you with a variety of data collection, analytic, and writing techniques to conduct collaborative projects. It also answers your questions about the bigger picture: What advantages does a collaborative approach offer to autoethnography? What are some of the methodological, ethical, and interpersonal challenges you’ll encounter along the way? Model collaborative autoethnographies and writing prompts are included in the appendixes. This exceptional, in-depth resource will help you explore this exciting new frontier in qualitative methods.

This session will discuss and illustrate how Harry Potter movies were used to enable students to apply, analyze, evaluate and synthesize/create (i.e. higher order thinking skills per Bloom’s taxonomy) course concepts as their final course project. Indeed, the world of Potter illustrated leadership approaches, ethical decision-making, teamwork, ethical climates etc., thus bringing the course material to life using movies and characters that these students have grown up with. I will share and illustrate how and why this works.

The four studies in this presenter symposium add to the literature by linking religion and spirituality to organizational outcomes. The first study explores the linkages between spiritual climate and organizational learning in teams. The second study discusses employees’ perceptions of workplace chaplaincy and connects it to employee wellbeing, organizational commitment and job satisfaction. The third study relates Islamic religiosity to ethical judgments. The fourth study explores the links between the concept of workplace spirituality and corporate ethics as described by business leaders. Together, the studies provide linkages between workplace spirituality and religion with business ethics, employee engagement, job satisfaction, employee well...

Work and Quality of Life, 2012

This chapter discusses the effect of accommodation of religious and spiritual practices in the wo... more This chapter discusses the effect of accommodation of religious and spiritual practices in the workforce from three approaches: a legal approach, one that focuses on preventing discrimination; a faith-friendly approach, one in which leadership may positively emphasize the importance of faith in the workplace; and one of respectful pluralism in which employees develop religious competency as needed. This latter approach borrows from healthcare. Religious competencies are learned skills and attitudes which help us understand religious values, both similarities and differences, and ease communication between and among customers, volunteers, and employees. I conceive of the quality of work life being increased by religious competency when the necessary ingredients to create respectful religious pluralism are in the workplace: support from upper management, recognition, and integration of religious groups in the workplace; partners in the community who can educate the workforce; a culture of respect; and measurement of a culture of respect.

Research paper thumbnail of Introduction: the complex interface of work and religion

Despite extensive scholarship and developments in the field of management over the last century, ... more Despite extensive scholarship and developments in the field of management over the last century, and plentiful evidence of the worldwide increasing religious diversity (Alesina et al., 2002; Pew Research Center, 2014), not much attention has been paid to religious diversity and its role in the workplace. Religion has been traditionally seen as a private matter with little or no consideration given to religious diversity in the workplace. Today, given the re-emergence or revival of religious identities and sentiments in the Middle East, Europe, North America, South Asia and other parts of the world, it is crucial for policymakers and employers to develop better understanding and management of religious diversity. This is particularly important in the global marketplace given that companies are increasingly interacting with diverse religions, cultures and stakeholders (Syed & Ozbilgin, 2015). In the last three decades, there has been a growing number of courses in academia and corporate training, and an exponential increase in publications in the area of diversity, equality and social responsibility. These avenues have raised the issue of diversity, but the discussion on religious diversity has been somewhat superficial and limited. Leaders and managers are interested in pre-empting or resolving religious conflicts and tensions while trying to harness diversity for enhanced individual and team performance, productivity and other organisational benefits. However, it is unclear how to go about doing this.
