Aggregates used herein were limestone, basalt, boulder, metallurgical slag including electric arc furnace and ferrochromium slags. In addition to some physical properties such as dry unit weight and water absorption, chemical elemental composition of representative sample of aggregate from each origin were determined. Finally, results gathered from the tests were analyzed and correlational relationship were found out for different mathematical functions. The results showed that aggregates in different origin shows different abrasion and fragmentation resistance values. The highest abrasion resistance were observed in artificial aggregates, whereas they have lower fragmentation resistances. Moreover, there were found out low correlational relationships between the two tests.

As the bitumen ages, it loses its original properties and flexibility. Hardened bitumen causes certain distresses in pavement that may endanger traffic safety and reduce travel comfort. Bitumen is one of recoverable material, however some techniques may not be ecological due to considerable energy, time, and cost. On the other hand, recovering of aged bitumen might be eco-friendlier, energy-efficient, and economic by using bio-based waste materials such as waste vegetable cooking oils (WVCO). In this perspective, this paper was established on the idea of sustainable recovery of aged bitumen and WVCO. Base bitumen was aged in case of short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) in laboratory condition and modified with WVCO ranging from 2 to 10% by weight of bitumen. To determine the effect of WVCO modification on aged bitumen conventional and rheological test methods were utilized. To find the optimum rate of WVCO for full recovery of aged bitumen, an index called Pure Rejuvenation Index (PRI) was specified and applied for each test results. It can be concluded from PRI analyses that WVCO can be used as rejuvenator to recover aged bitumen and approximately 3% and 6% of WVCO are required for ST and LT aged bitumen cases, respectively. However, different test methods yield different optimum rates of WVCO for ST and LT aged bitumen. Recovering of WVCO and aged bitumen by using together may provide environmental protection and conservation of resources.

There are three contributing factors, which are human factors, road environment factors and vehicle factors in traffic accidents. Human factor is the basic factor that effect traffic accidents and the intensity of them. However, the role of road environment factors are considerably high in traffic accident. One of the main factor is the friction occurs between wheels and road surface. Accidents related to the skidding are the most common among the accidents based on road environment and caused by the lack of friction between vehicle tire and road surface. Measuring the pavement skid resistance is quite complex issue. Since, there are many factors such as pavement properties, tire properties, and environmental and climatic conditions effect the skid performances of road surface. In the scope of this study, a brief overview was done on pavement skid resistance and in ...

Research paper thumbnail of The waste transparent nylon modified bitumen properties: Experimental assessment on physical, rheological properties and storage stability

It is possible to recycle plastic waste with using different technological processes that require excellent energy, cost, labor, and produce significant amount of greenhouse gas. However, the reverse of this situation can also be possible. Using the waste as a modifier in bitumen to improve their characteristics may be an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative method for recycling. In this regard, this study was established on investigation the effect of Waste Transparent Nylon (WTN) with different rate from 0.5% to 3.0% by weight in bitumen with 0.5% increment to be used a modifier for sustainable recycling. To achieve it, series physical and rheological test were performed on the bitumen samples to determine the changes occur in properties of them. Physical test methods including penetration, softening point, viscosity and flashing point were conducted on the unaged samples. On the other hand, rheological test methods including dynamic shear resistance and bending beam rheometer tests were performed on the unaged and aged samples. To determine compatibility between the WTN and bitumen, storage stability tests were conducted. Testing results showed that modifying bitumen with WTN changes bitumen characteristics, significantly. It was found that there are certain increase in softening point, viscosity and flashing point, while decrease in penetration values. Rheological assessment, on the other hand, indicated that there are obvious increase in rutting and thermal cracking resistance, while reduce in fatigue resistance of the bitumen sample. However, WTN modified bitumen samples did not show storage stability except of the one done with 0.5%. Overall, the results pointed out that bitumen modification with WTN can be one of sustainable solution for both recycling of WTN and improvement of bitumen properties. While it is used in bitumen, certain benefits to economy and environment can be achieved
