٣ شهر تم التحرير - 🌟SPE Abu Dhabi Section recently conducted an illuminating SPE Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Erdal Ozkan (Colorado School of Mines) on CO2-EOR and sequestration challenges at the pore scale. With 110 registrations from industry professionals and students, the session provided profound insights into this critical domain of energy transition. Key takeaways: 🔬 The DL delved deep into the microscopic behavior of CO2 in reservoir rocks, highlighting how pore-scale mechanisms significantly impact overall field performance in both EOR and sequestration projects. 🌍 Understanding these fundamental processes is crucial as our industry works to optimize carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives while maintaining efficient hydrocarbon recovery. The lecture demonstrated how cutting-edge research at the pore scale is bridging the gap between what we know already and what we’re still ignoring, for advancing our carbon management strategies. Big thanks Society of Petroleum Engineers International for this flagship Distinguished Lecturer Program, And special thanks to Dr. Ozan for sharing his expertise with our community.#SPE #CarbonCapture #EOR #EnergyTransition #CO2Sequestration #PetroleumEngineering #Sustainability

🌟Mark your calendars to attend the upcoming Technical Program session by Dr. Ahmed Abou-Sayed, CEO, Advantek International Corporation; He is a hydraulic fracturing and reservoir geomechanics expert with over 50 years of experience and 15 US Patents. Hydraulic fracturing has evolved over the past eight decades, transforming industries like oil and gas, geothermal energy, waste disposal, mining, and deep well carbon sequestration. This lecture traces its history and adaptation across various sectors, highlighting the need for specialized knowledge. It emphasizes the importance of understanding reservoirs and post-fracturing dynamics to avoid costly failures and environmental disasters. The lecture also underscores hydraulic fracturing's role in advancing sustainability and supporting the energy transition towards net zero, with examples from the USA and GCC on waste stream sequestration and carbon removal. 🗓️ Thursday, 30 January 2025 📍 Abu Dhabi Energy Center, Al Ghaf-1 Room 04:30-05:00 pm Networking 05:00-06:00 pm Distinguished Lecture 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/dtk6tCC5Join. 🌟 Mark your calendars to attend SPE Abu Dhabi Section‘s first SPE Distinguished Lecture of 2025 by Dr. Erdal Ozkan, Professor, Colorado School of MinesTitle: CO2-EOR and Sequestration: Challenges on Pore Scale Abstract: Although the awareness of the environmental impact of energy production and utilization are on the rise, predictions for the next 30-50 years indicate a growing energy demand of the increasing world population. Moreover, the recent experiences have revealed the risks of an immediate departure from the conventional energy sources and the importance of achieving a sustainable energy diversity. These developments unequivocally point to the continuing contribution of oil and gas to the supply of uninterrupted and affordable energy with an increased awareness of its environmental impact. This presentation addresses CO2-EOR and sequestration as critical contributions of the oil and gas industry to a sustainable energy diversity with environmental conscience. Although CO2-EOR and sequestration can be applied in conventional and unconventional reservoirs, the size and abundance of tight, unconventional reservoirs offer special opportunities. However, the micrometer to nanometer pore sizes of unconventional reservoirs pose challenges to our conventional reservoir wisdom and take us out of our comfort zone. In this presentation, CO2-EOR and sequestration are discussed with an emphasis on the challenges in small-/ultra-small-porosity reservoirs. The research highlights are presented, together with laboratory and field examples, to emphasize the role of complex molecular level reactions between the injected/stored fluids with the resident fluids and reservoir rock during CO2-EOR and sequestration. The "main takeaway" of this presentation is that CO2-EOR and sequestration are critical technologies for our contribution to energy diversity — but we must look beyond our conventional reservoir wisdom and develop effective technologies to meet the energy demand while reducing its carbon footprint. 🗓️ Tuesday, 21 January 2025 📍 ADNOC HQ, Floor 33 (Updated) 04:30-05:00 pm Networking 05:00-06:00 pm Distinguished Lecture 🔗 Register here (Mandatory): https://lnkd.in/dtqzvqTh #WeAreSPE #SPEAbuDhabi #DistinguishedLecturer #DL - أعاد SPE Abu Dhabi Section نشر هذا

I was honored to be invited as a panelist, being among the 2024 Energy Influencers webinar series and arranged by the Society of Petroleum Engineers International. Attended by 200+ live views and 500+ total day of live views on LinkedIn and Energy Stream, the session focused on how technology innovations in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are enabling the global transition to net-zero emissions. Key discussions of my talk included advancements in direct air capture, AI-optimized materials, and CCUS’s critical role in decarbonizing heavy industries. I tried to address scaling large projects such as the scale of UAE's ambitious initiatives and the importance of industry collaboration and public acceptance. Sharing insights and solutions to accelerate CCUS adoption was a highlight of this impactful event. I would like to thank my colleagues Natan Battisti and Rostyslav Dolog, PhD for the enriched discussion. Special thanks to SPE team Nathaly F. and Asha Robles for the entire arrangements and making it happen. CCUS is a topic that crosses discipline boundaries. In my opinion, SPE members have an advatage to lead and share knowledge for CCUS related topics.#NetZero #CCUS #EnergyInnovation #wearespe
