The disastrous Greek defeat in the Greek-Turkish War (1919–1922) and the subsequent Treaty of Lausanne together constitute a major turning point in the history of Modern Greece. Not only did these events end Greece’s irredentist dream, but they also led to the uprooting of 1.5 million Greek Orthodox people from Asia Minor and their resettlement in Greece. Despite its importance, the trauma that the exodus inflicted on refugees and non-refugees alike was not treated at the time as a subject in its own right; rather, it was subsumed within competing nationalist narratives that were directly related to the ongoing political conflicts that beset interwar Greece. Refugee associations negotiated the memory of Asia Minor for the purpose of achieving the integration of refugees into mainstream society without ever directly addressing the burden of the trauma itself.

This issue should be understood in the broader context of the (post)-ottoman transition period, the complete annihilation of imperial structures and the rise of the nation-state. Within this broader context, new social and cultural lines were drawn, including the division between public and private. Greek nationalist discourses discursively framed women’s presence in the public sphere, insisting that women’s activities should be compatible with national aims and strategies. However, this discursive framing opened room for negotiation. The article traces the emergence of new forms of female agency, notably in education, philanthropy, and the literary world where women writers, journalists and activists were directly involved in these gendered negotiations. Their writings within women’s magazines affected a diverse literate female reading public

The main point is that the Greek Orthodox elites faced western influence not just as models to follow but also as sources of threat to the building of cohesion and identity in the Greek Orthodox communities. Through this ambivalent reaction the project of Hellenization in the Ottoman Empire as a civilizing process was rearranged. In addition the agency of the Greek Orthodox elites was also reaffirmed.
