It then seemed that the Greek political ecology was finally coming of age, yet after just two years the party collapsed, marking a decade-long eclipse of green politics in Greece. This book presents and discusses the emergence of political ecology in Greece, the formation of the Green party, its electoral and parliamentary record, the internal tensions and external shocks it experienced as well as the reasons leading to the final collapse of the Greek greens. The book is based on extensive archival research and a large number of interviews with key activists of the period. Thus it should be especially useful to students of green parties and politics or anyone else who may be interested in the emergence and early development of the Greek green movement.

We examine in particular the underlying ideas, public concerns, state efforts, economic considerations and social conditions which shaped the management of the Greek forests over the first fifty years of Greek statehood. Despite an ever-growing body of legislative measures, the Greek forests retreated during this period. The main reason for this development was the practical inability of the Greek government to enforce its envisaged protective/managerial framework, not only due to a lack of the necessary resources, but most importantly because the framework was at odds with the rural populations’ traditional uses of the forest and their practical needs, especially the needs of the transhumant shepherds of the period.

Research paper thumbnail of Do single-use facemask users' care for the effects on the (marine) environment during the COVID-19 pandemic? Preliminary results from Greece

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021

This paper examines which demographic and attitudinal characteristics relate to an individual&#39... more This paper examines which demographic and attitudinal characteristics relate to an individual's knowledge and perception of the environmental footprint of single-use mask s/he is using in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on a self-selected sample of Greek citizens (N = 462), it is found that demographic characteristics and pro-environmental concern are unrelated to the single-use mask users' knowledge and concern regarding the environmental impacts of the mask they are using. This unanticipated finding suggests that the circumstances of the COVID pandemic may mute the theoretically taken-for-granted connection between environmental interest/concern and the awareness of environmental impacts, thus any future attempts to introduce more environmentally-friendly single-use mask alternatives and/or to curb the current ones' environmental impact should start by reenergizing this suppressed nexus.

By employing Hierarchical Linear Multilevel (HLM) modeling we find that, for the period 2000-2015, a drop in the national GDP (a "recession effect") as well as endorsing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for receiving a IMF/EU/ECB financial "rescue-package" (a "Troika effect") have non-significant to positive impacts on a number of national environmental quality and policy indicators, over and above other (economic, political and governance) predictors, for Eurozone and non-Eurozone countries alike. Nevertheless, this changes drastically if we examine these two factors' interaction: experiencing a 'recession' while being a recipient of a Troika-sponsored 'rescue package' has detrimental effects on an EU country's national environment.

The authors analyze the global field of media climate change discourse using 17 diverse cases and 131 frames. They find four main conflicting dimensions of difference: validity of climate science, scale of ecological risk, scale of climate politics, and support for mitigation policy. These dimensions yield four clusters of cases producing a fractured global field. Positive values on the dimensions show modest association with emissions reductions. Data-mining media research is needed to determine trends in this global field.

In terms of domestic policies to reach this target, the main strategy employed by Greek governments has been to move away from reliance on domestically available and cheap lignite towards natural gas and renewable energies for power generation. Other measures such as nuclear energy and energy taxes were never seriously considered due to widespread public opposition, and generally Greek governments have shied away from more aggressive approaches.

Our findings suggest a mixed picture: the Greek media debate is characterized by consensus on the anthropogenic causes of CC and on the promotion of renewable energy sources as a means for tackling Greek CC-related emissions. However when examining more specific/controversial CC-policy decisions, there is less evidence supporting a close link with the national character of Greek media reporting, with newspapers appearing to align themselves along partisan lines.

However, that electoral success proved to be quite short-lived, since in the years to follow the Greek Greens faded away. They were divided and faced the threat of political extinction, only to be resuscitated at the national election of 2015 by allying themselves with the winning leftist Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA). This article draws on archival and survey data to recount the electoral fate of the Ecologists Greens from their creation to their current place in the Greek parliament and government.

As economists have identified numerous economically viable ways of radically cutting emissions, it is clear that the obstacles to decisive action are political in nature. This book tackles the issue of how these might be overcome by providing a broad-ranging and authoritative overview of the contemporary politics of climate policy in affluent democracies in order to identify political strategies that would make it easier for governments to make major cuts in greenhouse gas emissions without sustaining significant political damage. As such it is essential reading for anyone who wishes to improve their understanding of how climate change can be stopped.

Our data originates from an empirical research of Greek citizens conducted in Autumn 2013 (N =293). Through structural equation modeling, we find that PBC is consistently the most important predictor of RI. Moral Norms have a larger effect on RI than Attitude while their influence is primarily direct. On the contrary, demographic characteristics were found to be statistically non significant predictors of RI, similarly to Subjective Norms.

To answer this question, this article explores the climate communication strategies of non-state actors with various country origins. Adopting the quantitative content analysis method, it comparatively analyses differing frame utilizations (e.g. ecological/meteorological, policy, economic and energy interests, culture, science and technology, civil society) of non-state actors in their selected climate change/global warming-related reports (n=89) on the Mediterranean. The findings provide clues on the cosmopolitan framing of non-state actors on the regional level.
