Considering Distomo as one of the cities-symbols that endured the genocidal violence of National Socialism, as one of the main loci of memory in the Greek historical martyrdom, and as a focal point in the European network of martyr cities, the aforementioned confrontation concerns firstly, the management of the event in reference to identity and historical consciousness, a choice that points towards certain politics of memory in the local society, and, secondly, the moral claim for the recognition of the city’s suffering and the undertaking of responsibilities by the German State. In light of these, the authors approach the issue from a twofold point of view, that is, (a) by analyzing the ways National Socialism, WWII and the mass execution of Distomo’ residents are presented in secondary education history textbooks, and (b) by the interdisciplinary presentation of the local community’s memory politics, which are manifested in the Museum for the Victims of National Socialism and their Mausoleum, around which commemorative and performative rituals are organised on an annual basis. Apart from elevating the role of ceremonies in the memory-making process, this interdisciplinary approach researches the function of education within the official ceremonies, as an important field in the construction of memory.

The monarchy instituted annual celebrations for occasions such as the apovatíria-the anniversary of Otto's landing in Nafplio-and also organized festivities for some of the king's other public appearances (departures, arrivals, inauguration of various institutions). The festivities were primarily based on the traditions of European royal courts and secondarily on the protocol of the Orthodox Church. The monarchy and its concomitant institutions, the church (with its religious ceremonies) and the army (with its hierarchy), offered a familiar and safe spectacle with their firmly established rites such as parades, processions, hymns, and chants. Given the scanty financial resources of the Greek state during Otto's reign, sponsoring such celebrations required a delicate balance. Focusing on the example of the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence on March 25, this article emphasizes the regime's effort to stage said celebrations in a manner befitting both the significance of each event and the king's grandeur without provoking public sentiment with the high cost of the celebrations or with events that were unfamiliar to the inhabitants of the Greek capital, Athens.

Particular attention is given to studies at universities abroad and to students’ pathways. By examining the prominent position of the elites among students abroad we pose the question to what extent there has been a pattern change since the past. We highlight that the possession of a degree adds power to one’s personal course, especially in two periods (early 1860s until mid-1890s, end of 1950s until mid-1980s). A common feature of these periods is the upward structural social mobility. During the first and especially the second period, shortages in certain professions, along with state expansion, led to the increase in demand for degrees, aside from immediate graduate absorption. The article also ascertains that lately a «reservoir» with a significant number of ...

This essay focuses on the School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Athens, documents quantitative and qualitative data on the female presence, and illuminates the different experiences of women practitioners while, at the same time, attempting to address the question about the gender-based characteristics which penetrate Greek academic life and scientific endeavour. The access of these women in the scientific staff of the School of Physics and Mathematics is related to issues of social class, social networks, personal and family relationships, and political context. Their contribution and status are investigated within the general conditions that govern university as an institution and a microcosm – competition and rivalry, scientific controversy and consensus, m...

The article also ascertains that lately a «reservoir» with a significant number of foreign studied Greeks has «accumulated» abroad. Though comparable with the case in other European countries, this becomes noteworthy when taking into account the relatively smaller Greek population. This mobility concerned a reasoned economic choice, together with being attributed to the social value attached to education. Simultaneously, it was linked to the expectation of global quality education, acquisition of a personal cultural experience, along with improved credentials that create better professional prospects and high income. Nonetheless, in the case of certain groups, this mobility was governed by the spirit of a family tradition and the reproduction of social and cultural capital.
