This could help address concerns that REDD+ interventions oversimplify local dynamics and complexities. The concept of territoriality subsumes a variety of definitions and conceptions, some of which are embedded in Traditional Ecological Knowledge and represented in the multiple expressions of collective indigenous identity. We compare and contrast Western and indigenous ontologies of territoriality and identify three ways in which engagement with territoriality can enhance REDD+ implementation and effective non-state actor participation.

Indigenous forest practices and their inherent knowledge are included in current global governance in very limited ways. Onto-epistemological openings in forest policies are needed in the face of converging climate, food and health crises. The indigenous forest relations and practices analyzed here may offer possibilities for such onto-epistemological openings. The current FAO and UNFCCC forest definitions are contrasted with indigenous forest understandings. While the current national and global definitions of forests contain a wide range of discrepant definitions, making the application of a shared forest policy difficult and even impossible , most institutional definitions share a positivist and technical approach to forest defining and govern-ance. National and global discrepancies in definitions exist within the politics-as-usual process of forest defining, politics that could be challenged by the political ontology of forests that questions the deeper level of how forests should be conceptualized, placing greater emphasis on care, reciprocity, and the type of relational approach present among Amazon indigenous communities.

potential of social movements in
achieving significant changes in
contemporary democracies, with
respect to the relevance of a
strengthening of these actors in the
case of Latin America. In a region such
as Latin America, social movements in
their struggles for political recognition
of their cultural identities, are political
actors able to an appropriate power
balance between the political,
economic and social spheres. In this
framework, this paper firstly illustrates
the transformative capacity of these
movements based on conceptual
approaches. Secondly, it presents
some conditions of the current Latin
American social reality and how these
movements increase inclusion of the
citizens and their collective demands.
Finally, this text focuses on the role of
consolidating a political citizenship, as
the root of any successful process of
social mobilization and the formation
of collective social practices, relevant to
build an harmonious social order.

the recent events in Japan and Bolivia, cases in which the universally shared ideas about development and democracy are met with
the common criteria for the majority of the countries in the world.
This relationship is analyzed comparing the particularities of each
context regarding the concepts mentioned. Japan, despite being
considered as an economically developed country, is criticized for
its lack of exercise of democratic, popular politics. That country, despite being in the 21st century, remains a constitutional monarchy.
Thus, given the catastrophic episode from March, 2011, the destiny
of the citizens was defined by the imperial family. Bolivia, for its
part, since the beginning of this century has managed a national
reconstruction that has re-founded the Constitution and, therefore,
the nation and the State. However, this democratic reorganization
now faces a number of dilemmas where the State is debating between democracy and authoritarianism, as well as between liberal
development and development from a communal perspective.

2001 / 2013, these periods have addressed the development of democracy in
America Latina to completely another direction, particularly for relationship
between State and nation. This text presents briefly some reflection points, that
allows to compare two historical moments of the contemporaneous history of
Latin America, it means the last two decades: from one side, ethnical rights,
multiculturalism and interculturalism in the constitutions, and from another
side, the transition from Centralization to the tension between “Decentralization
against Polarization”.

northern Cauca in Colombia, in order to posit new conceptualizations to understand ethnic movements in
Latin America. The discussion begins with a brief review of some gaps found in studies about those social
phenomena, to continue to analyse particularities and experiences of this community process starting
from the following questions: how is the nature of the Colombian Nasa movement’s indigenous politics
expressed?; how could we understand its political reach in light of social movement theories?; how to analyse
the dynamics of their collective actions along the last decades? These questions are answered through a
theoretical approach that firstly focuses on understanding social movement political practices, to proceed
with the proposal for a new typology of collective actions for these movements.

as a sign of political maturity and of advancement toward social democratization. Nevertheless
the case of the current Latin American social movements show the complexity of the unfinished
processes related to the yearned democratic consolidation. This article examines how much theinstitutionalization has improved the democratization of the indigenous movement in the Colombian political system. Firstly, this text analyzes the political function of this movement in the promotion of a multicultural and pluriethnic nation at the Constitutional Assembly and in the
Constitution of 1991. Secondly, the article contrasts the legal logic behind the implementation of
indigenous participation with the dynamics of the native communities. Finally, the internal reflection of this movement is described, after nearly two decades of experience that simultaneously
combines the upholding of their struggle with their institutionalization.
