Jakob Walcher | Astrophysical Institute Potsdam (original) (raw)
I am a science staff member at the AIP (Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam) in Germany in the "Galaxies and Quasars" group. This means I work on research in Astronomy, in the general field of galaxy evolution (see my papers at http://tinyurl.com/jwalcherlib ). I am in particular interested in (1) Galaxy nuclei, (2) Understanding the formation of galaxies from astro-archeological signatures, and (3) large spectroscopic surveys. To make progress in these areas, I am technically interested in measuring galaxy properties from their integrated SEDs, in particular measuring element abundances from spectra (see also www.sedfitting.org ) and in galaxy surveys, in particular those making use of Integral Field Spectroscopy. Finally, I am the project scientist for the CALIFA survey (www.caha.es/CALIFA) and the operations scientist for the 4MOST facility project (www.4most.edu) .

The exceptionally bright (10 6 - 10 8 L solar ) but compact (r e ~ 5 pc) nuclear star clusters found by Böker et al. (2002) have been ...

Compact star clusters are commonly found in the centers of galaxies and may foster formation of intermediate-mass seed black holes that facilitate the growth of supermassive black holes in galaxy nuclei. Such star clusters can be studied with minimal background ...

These nuclear clusters (NCs) may provide important clues to the central structure and secular evolution of disk galaxies. However, their origin and nature ...

The data, obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), allow us to derive cluster ages via stellar population synthesis methods. We present some ...
