We collected the demographic details, associated clinical symptoms and ABO blood groups from all the patients. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The most common blood group affected was B + (35.5%) followed by A + (26.10%), AB + (20.60%) and O + (11.18%) and the least common was AB-(0.96%), O-(1.51%), A-(1.65%) and B-(1.79%). Conclusions: ABO blood grouping can be used as one of the simplest yet efficient markers for COVID-19. Blood group B Rh-positive and A Rh-positive were the most prevalent blood group types in patients with COVID-19.

Research paper thumbnail of Pathogen Reduction Technology: A Novel Possibility for Inactivation of Blood Products Used in Oral and Periodontal Surgeries

Journal of International Society of Preventive & Community Dentistry, 2020

Emergency surgical treatment has been challenging and the risk of blood contamination has been hi... more Emergency surgical treatment has been challenging and the risk of blood contamination has been high, which is a concern among the medical and dental fraternity. The risk outweighs the benefits in these unprecedented times if proper screening and inactivation of blood products are not performed. Pathogen reduction technologies incorporate various modalities for the inactivation of blood products mainly related to blood transfusion. Oral surgical procedures and periodontal surgeries use platelet-rich fibrin for various regenerative procedures that amplify the prognosis positively. The use of blood products for various treatments could result in contamination, a factor which should be significant attention. The objective of this study was to review the role of pathogen reduction technology in inactivating pathogens in blood products and its use in oral and periodontal surgical procedures. The literature presented in the study is from original studies from a period of 2000 to 2020 which...

Journal of Oral Microbiology, 2021

Introduction: Bacterial and fungal secondary infections following COVID-19 disease are widely bei... more Introduction: Bacterial and fungal secondary infections following COVID-19 disease are widely being reported and are an area that should receive careful attention. Mucormycosis is a fatal fungal condition affecting immunocompromised patients caused by a group of mold mucoromycetes. Candida albicans (C. albicans) is an oral commensal present in almost 40-65% of healthy oral cavities in adults. Several cases of mucormycosis and oral candidiasis have been reported lately in COVID-19 patients, and it may elevate the associated risks of morbidity and mortality. Materials and Methods: Articles were taken from a period of 2020 to April 2021 using search sources such as Cochrane, PubMed, Fungiscope and Mycobank using keywords mucormycosis, Black fungus, oral candidiasis, white fungus, COVID-19, Sars-Cov-2. Discussion: The development of oral mucocutaneous lesions, such as mucormycosis and candidiasis in COVID-19 patients could be due to inhaling spores resulting in pulmonary and/or sinus congestion and prolonged mechanical ventilation in the ICU settings and the long-term use of broad-spectrum antibiotics respectively. The onset of candidiasis after the emergence of COVID-19 clinical signs and symptoms varied considerably and is reported within 1-30 days in most of the cases reported in the literature. Biofilms present on the denture surfaces are predisposing factors to oral candidiasis. We aim to summarize the limited data available regarding diagnosis, clinical presentation, and therapeutic approaches for the management of Mucormycosis and oral candidiasis in COVID-19 patients. Conclusion: Careful monitoring of oral lesions should be instituted through interdisciplinary telemedicine and teleconsultation to aid in primary diagnosis, thereby avoiding personal attendance during the pandemic. Dental practitioners should be included among the interdisciplinary teams for exhaustive intraoral examination and reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality.

To compare the findings with similar studies and provide recommendations for the prevention and management of these fractures. Materials and methods: A 7-year retrospective study of maxillofacial fractures due to motor vehicle accidents was done. Results: We found that most of the accidents took place in December, and the majority of the patients were pedestrians (27%). Male to female ratio was 6:1, and patients in their third decade of life were the most affected (39%). The parasymphysis was the most prominently affected region (27.7%), followed by the orbital bone (18.6%). Open reduction surgery was done in 56% of the cases, and postoperative complications were found in 18.4%. Conclusions: Pedestrians were most commonly involved in the accidents. An increase in awareness, trauma centers, and better facilities would perhaps improve the management of such fractures.

Material and Methods: Fourteen resin endodontic blocks are used for each system. The assessment was done by comparing and measuring the data collected of pre-instrumentation and post-instrumentation CBCT axial and sagittal images to assess the centering ability, canal transportation, preparation time and changes in canal curvature. These measurements were taken in 3mm ,5mm and 7 mm from the apical exit of the endodontic block used. Results: The mean Canal Transportation of XP System (Group A) in 3mm, 5mm and 7mm sections measured with values (-.5214, -.2714 and -.02140) respectively. The mean transportation of WaveOne Gold syste...

This study examines whether personality profiles, personality factors, or clusters of personality factors are associated with academic success. Methods. The study includes all fifth-year dental students registered at the College of Dentistry, Ajman University, in 2019/2020. One hundred and seventy students were invited to complete personality and performance measures using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) scale; the weighted grade point average (GPA) was used to assess students' academic performance. Results. Of the 170 participants, 60% were female and 40% were male. Participants ranged in age from twenty-four to twenty-seven years, with an average age of twenty-four years. There was a relationship between personality scores obtained for the students and their subsequent academic performance. The broad conscientiousness, competence, achievement, and dutifulness predicted academic and clinical success. The prediction accuracy of conscientiousness was improved by the inclusion of dutifulness, self-discipline, and deliberation. Conclusion. This study confirms that the students' personality profile is a substantial predictor of academic performance and likely to help select future intakes of students, although a prospective study would be required for a definite answer to this question.

Also known as (SARS-CoV-2, SARS2 and 2019-nCoV), this epidemic is spreading widely across the globe like a wildfire. Recent reports Background: The pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 highlighting the zoonotic cross-over link in the present century has provoked an emergency worldwide. Recent experimental evidence supporting the proposition of ABO blood grouping and its susceptibility in certain blood group individuals has created interest among researchers to explore more. Aim: The aim of this study is to find the susceptibility of "ABO" blood group in COVID-19-positive cases. Objectives: Association of ABO blood group patterns with COVID-19-positive cases. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, observational study design was conducted among 728 confirmed positive COVID-19 admitted to the tertiary health care center in Maharashtra from June 01, 2020 to August 31, 2020. The inclusion criteria were COVID-19-positive cases confirmed by positive real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction test of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Research paper thumbnail of Mycotic infections – mucormycosis and oral candidiasis associated with Covid-19: a significant and challenging association
