Research paper thumbnail of Irısh poet J.C. Mangan’s views on the east within the frame of the oriental renaissance

Proceedings of the International Conference Thailand, 2018, Dec 4, 2018

Mangan (1803Mangan ( -1849) ) wrote poetry about the Orient in a non-Orientalist mode of thinking. His ideas about the non-West make more sense if we locate him in the Oriental Renaissance movement of his time. This counter movement, which critiqued the givens of modernity, and the way the East was represented in the West underlined the operating mechanisms of the Enlightenment ideology which defined for the Easterners what/ who they were. In this mode of thinking, although Mangan acknowledged the flaws of the Eastern traditions, he placed the East on an equal footing with the West. In his prose work, he went so far as to say that "the Mind… looks rather Eastward than Northward." Interestingly enough, he also poeticised his views about the Orient; a case in point is Suleiman, who appears as the source of solution to the impasse of the West in his "The Time of the Roses." This paper will give an overview of his ideas on the East offering a close reading of his poem "The Time of the Roses," and argue that Mangan establishes an alternative vantage point to approach the East, which is almost untainted by the ills of the West and the hierarchies established by the Eurocentric gaze.

Despite the effectiveness of such methods, they also tend to fail to unpack, uncovering unuttered meanings that remain incommunicable. Art-based research is heavily anchored in the notion that art inspires people, evokes them for better expression, and awakens visions, using diverse forms of artistic expression to explore unuttered meanings. With this in mind, this study's actual raison d'etre was to find alternative ways of acquiring future teachers' notions of the ideal teacher, assuming that non-traditional research methods could provide details that studies following traditional methods had not. Specifically, we sought answers to two research questions: (1) How might a close and critical analysis of the work of pre-service teachers inform us about the ideal teacher they want to be in the future? (2) How can an exploratory ABR study such as ours help us develop and enhance our understanding of the theories and practices of arts-based research? This study was conducted with twelve pre-service English teachers at a state university in Türkiye. Data were collected through participants' drawings and a focus group interview. The visual data were analyzed through criteria for drawing, whereas thematic analysis was employed for verbal data. The analysis of the drawings highlighted the teacher as an ABR object, professional and cultural identity, engaging teaching styles, positive classroom atmosphere, and holistic education as the main aspects of the ideal teacher. These themes are critical as some align with the previous research on the ideal English teacher, whereas others yielded insights that might otherwise remain unexplored in traditional data collection methods. Therefore, we proposed that arts-based research (ABR) methods provide a robust and innovative framework for eliciting nuanced and unarticulated conceptions of the ideal teacher among pre-service teachers, offering deeper insights into professional and cultural identities, pedagogical approaches and educational philosophies that may remain inaccessible through traditional qualitative methodologies.

By using a mixed method design, data were collected through interviews with prospective and in-service teachers of English and a survey distributed to prospective teachers of English. The aim of the study was to find the characteristics of the effective English language teacher from the perspectives of the participants, whether or not in-service teachers are found to be effective from the perspective of prospective teachers, and how in-service teachers evaluate themselves as effective teachers. Apart from unearthing the qualities attached to the effective teacher, findings have shown that majority of the prospective teachers do not regard their mentors (in-service teachers) effective. Similarly, inservice teachers claim that not having proper in-service training programs and an updated curriculum, makes it difficult to be an effective teacher of English in their schools.

Hence, by means of a questionnaire, prospective English language teachers' (n= 412) perceptions of the target language and culture are sought to be answered in relation to their present knowledge of the target language and culture and their socioeconomic status. The results indicate that the participants see themselves knowledgeable in target language, but insufficient in target culture. Similarly, target culture is much less appreciated than the language. It is also shown that attitudes toward target language, knowledge of target culture, parental use of target language, family income, and father's job have significant influence on prospective teachers' perceptions.

Starting in the 2014-2015 school year, second graders in Turkish primary schools started to take English language courses with the implementation of the new national curriculum for primary schools' grades 2 to 8. What made this curriculum different from previous ones was its insistence on curricular gains that were designed in consideration of communicative language teaching and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR). So far, little research has been produced collecting teachers' views on this new curriculum in practice. Hence, in this study, the views of 4 primary school English language teachers currently teaching second graders were collected and analyzed to understand the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the new curriculum and the educational appropriateness of the curricular gains set for that specific level (2nd grades). Secondly, theoretical concerns and practical challenges associated with the implementation of the new curriculum are studied. Results showed that majority of these teachers had positive views on the new curriculum with its curricular gains although classroom materials and teaching hours remain problematic for them.

Preparatory class students (n=144) attending Erciyes University's School of Foreign Languages participated in the study and the data was collected through the Multiple Intelligences Inventory for Adults. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test analysis, correlation analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. Analysis of the data revealed no significant gender differences in the intelligence types held by the participants except for that between gender and linguistic intelligence which was positive. Negative but significant relationships were found between success in students' test scores in grammar and bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, and intrapersonal intelligences whereas the relationship between musical intelligence and writing was found to be significant and positive. Finally, no significant relationship was found between parental education and students' intelligence types.

Still, much research is needed to map and develop literature teaching in foreign language classrooms in Turkey. In this study, views of prospective English language teachers on literature and its place in their teacher education curriculum are studied. Eighty-four second and third year prospective teachers of English participated in this study. A five point Likert-type scale including 24 questions was developed and the reliability of the scale was found to be .962, pointing at the scale's high internal reliability. The findings indicated that 78% of the prospective teachers have positive feelings about literature courses in their teacher education programs. In terms of the genres, although accepting the novel and short story as important genres, majority of them do not think that poetry is an important genre that can be used in EFL classrooms. Although most of the participants believe that literature courses help learning about the target culture while developing students' lexis, in terms of language skills, they do not fully agree that speaking can be developed by means of literature.

edilmektedir. Çalışmada, Bermekîlerin Felicia Hemans’ın “Bermekîlerin Ağıtçısı” (İng. “The Mourner for the Barmecides”) ve James Clarence Mangan’ın
(İng. “The Time of the Barmecides”) şiirlerinde nasıl yer aldığı içerik ince-
Çalışmanın bulgularına göre Man-

Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative research method was used to understand participants’ overall knowledge. In total, 30 preservice teachers were selected from a larger pool after considering their grade point averages, sex, university affiliations and geographical backgrounds to ensure a balanced distribution and diversity. Qualitative data were collected through written productions, video recordings and a postproject survey. Findings – Findings revealed that preservice teachers deepened their understanding of SDGs and adopted a positive attitude toward SDGs while increasing their pedagogical awareness and knowledge of teaching English in response to SDGs. They also regarded literary texts as a valuable resource for teaching SDGs. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that literary works are valuable for educating preservice teachers on integrating SDGs. A detailed overview of the project and its outcomes can guide practitioners and teacher educators in integrating SDGs into their education programs and English language teaching.

Such practices, under the postmethod condition, are in constant influx, bringing continuous changes in both pre-service and in-service professional development programs. The aim of this paper, thus, is to discuss the relationship between this postmethod condition and a variety of English language teacher education practices situated in Turkey.
