This gives space to the formulation of research problem in teaching/research of political communication in the Indian context. The paper will investigate the questions that emerge out of the formulated research problem.

These public perceptions and the shapers of perceptions cannot be neglected in the process of policy making and law making process. This paper focuses on the media as a powerful determinant to shape public perceptions in turn shaping public policies. An attempt is made in this paper to lift the debate around media from traditional arguments of corporate and state control. Instead, media discourse is analysed under the theoretical framework of colonial consciousness, which is very much prevalent in most of the post-colonial victim societies including India. Some pertinent questions are raised in this paper regarding the perception shaping function of media in India with a broader influence of colonial consciousness. This paper primarily focuses on the western notions of India and the impact of those notions while understanding the political and socio-legal realities of contemporary India. An attempt is made to reflect on some questions applying the theoretical frameworks given by Edward Said’s Orientalism and S N Balagangadahar’s Colonial Consciousness.

When the Cold War ended at the beginning of the 1990s, some critical questions preoccupied many experts as to what would be the nature of the world politics and the source of conflict in the new world. Francis Fukuyama's 'End of History', Paul Kennedy's 'The Rise and Fall of Great Powers', Mearsheimer's 'The Tragedy of power politics' have attracted the attention of scholars, each presenting a bold and sweeping vision.
