After the land purchased from Napoleon doubled the size of the United States, President Jefferson talked Congress into funding exploration of this new land, now called the Federal Territory of Louisiana. In 1805, Lewis, Clark, and a small group of men composed of U.S. Army volunteers headed west of the Mississippi. These volunteers were nicknamed the Corps of Discovery.
