Grand Lake's Ryan Monceaux named LSWA 1A softball Coach of the Year - American Press (original) (raw)
Ryan Monceaux’s plan to get the Grand Lake softball team back into the limelight is working, and he has earned recognition along the way. Monceaux was voted the Class 1A Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Monceaux led the Hornets on a stunning playoff run and reached the semifinals for the first time since 2013. He is the first Grand Lake softball head coach to win the honor since Lindsay Smythe won the award in 2005 and 2008.
The Hornets went 18-8 and entered the playoffs as the No. 11 seed, then proceeded to knock off the No. 6 seed Mangham 12-10 in the regional round and No. 3 Lakeside 3-1 in the quarterfinals. Grand Lake lost to state champion Oak Grove 16-1 in the semifinals in Sulphur.
Grand Lake started the season 4-4, then won 14 of its next 17 games to reach the semifinals.
Also representing Grand Lake is senior softball pitcher Alaina Bearb and sophomore utility player Lake Faulk on the baseball team.
Bearb was one of three Hornets seniors and made an impact as their leadoff hitter, in the circle, and at shortstop. She went 13-5 with a 3.10 earned run average over 942/3 innings with 86 strikeouts and a .970 fielding percentage. At the plate, Bearb batted .440 with 15 doubles, 19 RBIs, 39 runs, and 21 stolen bases.

Also from Southwest Louisiana, Merryville sophomore Brynn Beard made the softball team at catcher. The District 4-1A MVP led Merryville to the quarterfinals while batting .563 with 33 RBIs, nine doubles, four triples and a .989 fielding percentage.
