Youth are most important assets of any nation, therefore, their personal growth and development s... more Youth are most important assets of any nation, therefore, their personal growth and development should be without any hindrance. In this modern competitive society, it is common to identify children who are at risk because of the hardships in their young lives (Rak & Patterson, 1996). Poverty, substance abuse, violence, family conflicts, and illness are a few potential vulnerabilities. According to various researches, the major concerns are that at risk children stand only slight chances of attaining their full potential as adults. Furthermore, there are worries that at risk individuals will become dysfunctional to the point of being incapable of supporting themselves or establishing rewarding relationships with others. However, despite all these problems, there are children who encounter stress and adversity in life and yet they fare well in the face of such challenges (Brooks, 2006; Masten & Coatsworth, 1998; Rak & Patterson, 1996). Children who succeed in spite of adversity have been identified as resilient; possessing certain strengths and benefiting from protective factors that help them overcome adverse conditions and thrive.Youths of Kashmir, IndiaFor over last three decades, Kashmir Valley has been the place of conflict between militants / terrorists and the Government forces. Bomb attacks, shoot-outs, pressure from both sides have affected the daily lives of the youth living in the valley. There are numerous cases of human rights abuse from both the militants and government forces in the form of arrests, house to house searches, abductions and torture. The ongoing violence, the continuous threat and poor future perspective put a heavy strain on the natural coping mechanisms of the youth in Kashmir. A lot of people suffer from stress related to traumatic events, high amounts of psychosocial problems (substance abuse, distrust), develop anxiety, mood and post-traumatic disorders at an alarming rate. Most of the mental pain is presented as physical disorders (somatoform disorders). Mental health experts have also stated that there has been a surprising increase in the number of stress and trauma related cases in the Kashmir valley and these psychological problems have also given rise to general health problems like diabetes, cardiac problems and hypertension (The News, August 18,2005).Due to ongoing violence and conflicts in the state of Kashmir, the University students face serious psychological and social difficulties andthey have the feelings of helplessness and alienation (Calhoun, 2006). The youth are continuously concerned with the issues of security and safety (Amin, 2009) and they experience frustration due to the inability to express their point in the ongoing armed conflict. The suicide rates are also increasing amongst the youth due to all these problems (Sofiya, 2012). Despite of all these problems, there are individuals who are able to overcome all these situations and are surviving and living their life to the full potential. They know as how to fight back to live effectively. It is their resilience.ResilienceDespite the vast body of research on resilience, there is little agreement on a single definition of resilience among scholars. In fact, scholars define the construct of resilience in different ways (Carle & Chassin, 2004).Resilience is broadly understood as positive adaptation in situations where difficulties-personal, familial or environmental are so extreme that we would expect a person's cognitive or functional abilities to be impaired (Masten C Rutter 1985). Resiliency, or resilience, is commonly explained and studied in context of a two-dimensional construct concerning the exposure of adversity and the positive adjustment outcomes of that adversity (Luther & Cicchetti, 2000). Masten (2011) contended that resilience refers to (1) people form high-risk groups who have had better outcomes than expected; (2) good adaptations despite stressful (common) experiences (when resilience is extreme, resilience refers to patterns in recovery); and (3) recovery from trauma. …

A large number of these examples are indigenously thought to be "illness", or at least afflictions, and most have local names. Culture-bound syndromes are generally limited to specific societies or culture areas and are localized, folk, diagnostic categories that frame coherent meanings for certain repetitive, patterned, and troubling sets of experiences and observations. Present overview paper has focused on various syndromes/disorders that are specific to India or Indian culture.

A synthesis of recent neonatal and prenatal imaging studies suggests that AgCC occurs in at least 1:4000 live births and. 3-5% of individuals assessed for neuro developmental disorders had AgCC. Complete and partial AgCC, probably, result from disruption of the early stages of callosal development which could have genetic, infectious, vascular or toxic causes. All the patients show poor cognitive function and social interaction. Aim: To present cognitive profile of a patient with AgCC. Case: Five years old baby girl attended the Child Development Centre of a Government Hospital in New Delhi with the chief complaints of delayed development and poor social skills. Tools: Developmental Profile II Alpern [1], Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) Schopler [2], and Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale (VABS) Sparrow [3]. Results and discussion: DA = 2 years 5 months, DQ = 46; CARS score =32. A child with autism is characterized by poor social interactions. At times, it may be difficult to differentiate AgCC from autism. Therefore, a very careful history, mental status examination, radio imaging and psychological evaluation are warranted. Indeed, developmental profile of such children remains below normal. Biological functions are often supported by multiple structures-single physical feature is coded for by multiple genes, for example, so that knocking out any single gene can't prevent that feature from developing apparently normally. The ability of multiple different structures to support a single function is 'degeneracy'. It is a "ubiquitous biological property, a feature of complexity" and an inevitable outcome of natural selection. It explains both why unusual brain conditions are not as catastrophic as they might be, and also why scientists find the brain so confounding to try and understand.

It is developmentally inappropriate levels of parent involvement and control in their children's lives, which is often observable through their advice, direction, and help with problem. They even make decisions for their children and personally invest in their children's goals. Today's adolescents are expected to make decisions pertaining to their health related behaviour and career related choices. Decision making refers to the capability of developing reliable level of competence to foresee the consequences of alternatives. It is the fourth phase of cognitive development which is normally reached during adolescence, and is synonymous with abstract thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Helicopter parenting has been shown to have negative outcomes in emerging adults but so far it has not been investigated in adolescents in India. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, correlational designed study to assess the relationship of Helicopter Parenting with Decision Making styles of Adolescents and their academic performance. Secondary objectives were to ascertain the effect of adolescents' variables on decision making styles and Helicopter parenting scores. A sample size of 425 adolescents was taken. Results: The mean HP scores were higher than the western scores. HP showed a significant correlation with Maladaptive decision making styles, with HP being a good predictor for maladaptive decision making in adolescents, (R 2 =.077, F(1,423)= 35.086, p=.000. There was no significant correlation with ADM-Q Adaptive type but showed a good linear model with self-esteem subscale. There was no statistical significant effect of adolescent's age on HPS. There was a significant negative correlation of HP scores with above average academic performance (0.115, p=0.017) and with total scores (0.106, p=0.029).Academic performance was a good negative predictor for HP (R 2 =0.011, F (1,424)= 4.800, p=0.029). Conclusions: Indian adolescents score high on HP scale. However Indian adolescents prefer not to strongly agree on HPS items and rather remain more non-decisive with mean score of 3.559.We also found that higher HPS score predicts maladaptive decision making style and negatively predicts self-esteem subscale of adaptive decision making styles. Implications: We need to educate the parents about the detrimental effects of helicopter parenting in order to have more self reliant adolescents.

It is vital in today's parlance, as it is believed that violence, aggression and the severe erosion of pacifism leads to conflict, hostility, disharmony and individual ineffectiveness, which further leaves a negative impact on the society. The study was conducted on 225 high school adolescents selected through purposive sampling technique. The psychological tools used were Beliefs about Aggression and Alternatives, Authoritative Parenting Index and Adolescent Well Being Scale. The results indicated that authoritative parenting is positively correlated to beliefs about aggression in adolescents and negatively to beliefs about non violence. Furthermore, high scores on beliefs about non violence is associated with greater wellbeing and high scores on beliefs about aggression is associated with possibilities of depression. Regression analysis showed that the data fit of the variance is high. It can be concluded that non violence upgrades, enhances and deepens the human spirit for positive societal development and harmony. It also clearly attests to the importance and significance of parents in children's lives and their holistic developmental process.

Sometimes, it happens so subtly that other reasons with loud appearance are the only ones to be addressed, leaving behind the unfinished business keeping the question still unanswered or vice versa. Sexual Orientation, on the other hand, had been constantly gaining attention from various disciplines including psychology, medicine and law. Researchers have significantly associated sexual orientation with mental health. The present research aimed to study the relationship between alexithymia and sexual orientation. In the study, 60 heterosexuals, 5 bisexuals and 60 homosexuals (N= 125) were included. After filling up informed consent, they completed personal data sheet, General health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The results did not show correlation between alexithymia and sexual orientation (r = 0.03, p = 0.75). However, on further analysis, significant negative correlation (r =-0.60, p = 0.02) with high alexithymic score.

An investigation of this nature is essential to understand developmental trajectory of neglect and abuse and to base any intervention plan for affected individuals and to build up a risk alleviating techniques as primary prevention.
Aim: To examine relationship of Childhood Neglect and Abuse with Emotion Regulation and Emotional Recognition in adolescents.
Method: A purposive sample of 140 children studying in English and Hindi medium schools located in Delhi and NCR region (India) was taken to test the hypotheses. Willing individuals of age range from 16 to 18 years of either sex were administered a set of self-administered questionnaires, viz., General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and The Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire (CECA) for collecting the data.
Results: The analysis indicated that GHQ cut-off score did not differ significantly on any of the study variables; and the examined constructs (sexual abuse, physical abuse, parental loss with difficult in emotion regulation and neglect, physical abuse with alexithymia) were positively correlated with Difficulty as measured on Emotion Regulation Scale and Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Results also indicated that sexual abuse and physical abuse were significantly predicting difficulty in emotion regulation (R2 = 0.38, p = 0.01) and alexithymia (R2 = 0.35, p = 0.01).
Conclusions: Deficits in emotion regulation and emotion recognition were ubiquitous in children reporting of adverse childhood experience such as neglect and abuse. Sexual and physical abuse emerged as significant variables, accounting for maximum variance in criterion variables viz. emotion regulation and recognition.

Lately all around us if we look at news articles, clippings of magazines, and social media all are influencing us to work towards "perfect bodies". It is essential for us to realize and focus on this issue and see how it can be fruitful for our knowledge base. Studies on this over time have shown that gym going individuals have advantage for their mental health. Looking at our research findings we can see that gym goers had slightly better body image satisfaction (33.61) as compared to non gym goers (33.00); for aggression also gym goers had scored significantly lower (70.08) as compared to non gym goers (78.81) and there was significant difference between them on this dimension(t= 2.06; p= 0.05); for mental health also gym goers had scored lower (9.75) as compared to non gym goers (11.15);; and while looking for relationship between gymming to body image satisfaction, mental health, happiness and aggression findings indicate that for relationship between gymming with mental health it was seen to be negative (-.158), with body image satisfaction there was positive relationship (.242); with happiness also there was seen to be a significant positive correlation (.258). With the help of this paper and after reviewing vast literature on this it can be concluded that mental health professionals should take this issue seriously and create awareness regarding body image dissatisfaction and its impact on their mental wellbeing and also how its impacting our other aspects of life.

Literature has found patients with pseudoseizures to belong to lower economic strata; however, no study has directly looked at the impact of income on the core contributing and maintaining factors of pseudoseizures. Aim This article studies the impact of income on perceived stress, coping, and family functioning in females with pseudoseizures. Materials and Methods Ninety-one females with pseudoseizures were recruited from the psychiatry department of a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India. Each participant completed the Perceived Stress Scale, Ways of Coping Questionnaire, and McMasters Family Assessment Device–General Functioning Scale. Other sociodemographic variables including per capita family monthly income, level of educati...

Generally, BDD for the most part, goes unrecognized and undiscovered in clinical settings. It is critical to perceive and precisely analyze BDD in light of the fact that this often secret disorder might be crippling. Patients with BDD have impaired functioning, poor quality of life, a high rate of self-destructive ideation and suicide attempts. In this way, it is essential to screen patients for BDD and abstain from misdiagnosing it as another disease. Non-psychiatric treatments (e.g., medicinal and / or surgical) which most patients look for and get inadequate for BDD. This article presents a clinically engaged outline of BDD symptoms, causes and analyses long term effects of psychotherapy on it.
