Data were collected from ninety ESL Indian students at Aligarh Muslim University with regards to their Facebook-based chats. The dataset was fed into SPSS for analysis. Major findings showed that the respondents tend to use vowel deletion, the substitution of numbers for phones, words represented by a single letter and overuse of sounds to represent phonology in their written text messages. With this in mind, the study yielded evidence that texting reverses the previous studies that spelling first and then phonology. That is to say, this study revealed that phonology affects the way of writing online text messages. This study also showed that phonology is used in the written forms and that Facebook users sometimes reject to follow the standard spelling of English and write the words as they are pronounced, not as they are written in standard English. Some phonological and morphological features of this language make it peculiar among Indo-Aryan languages. This write-up provides a phonological sketch of Kashmiri. The description o f Vowels and Consonants is given in order to build a general idea of the phonological system of the language. The process of nasalization is phonemic in Kashmiri. The aim of this write-up is to describe and show all the phonological features of the language, particularly those that are uniquely found in this language. In addition, an attempt has been made to describe and explain the various phonological processes such as Palatalization, Epenthesis and Elision, which occur in Kashmiri. All such processes are described with appropriate examples and the data comprising of lexemes and sounds for examples is primary data used by the author who is a native speaker of the language. Given to the peculiar features of this language, the process of homonymy, which is homographic in nature, is described with appropriate examples.

Independent India has, however, seen this sisterhood re-interpreted as a conflation of religious and linguistic identity, by which Urdu in particular has come to be represented as the language of Muslims. In this paper, we present the findings of a field survey in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mysore, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, which show that speakers of Urdu resist this identfication, and explicitly characterise both the language as well as their linguistic practices in terms of the shared and syncretic culture of India.

Both ontological and epistemological investigations have been the subject of debate and discussion in different civilizations producing a number of grammatical traditions other than the West. Arab, China, India and the ancient Near East can also boast of language traditions of greater antiquity. In terms of richness of insight and comprehensiveness of scope, both India and the Arab compete on equal terms with the West, where each grew independently of the others and for the most part developed separately, drawing on the resources of the culture within which it grew. Hence, there is strong need to have a study of comparative grammatical theory to which Indian, Arabs and Chinese also belong, centring on the questions of: What has been the importance of these theories explanatory categories appear in historically unrelated linguistic theory, and if they do, why? This perspective would bring new dimension to the study of l...

It also aims to investigate if texting follows any specific pattern. As this study aimed to investigate the linguistic features of texting and their impact on the structure of Standard English, the data of the study were collected from a sample of ninety students. The morphosyntactic elements, phonological elements and code mixing elements were linguistically analyzed separately, providing some examples from the data collected for the study. Although punctuation has been discussed under both morphosyntax and phonology, its significant presence in the data prompted us to look into the pragma-semantic elements in the use of punctuation by the texters. Five sent emails, five sent SMS and five sent Facebook chats from each of the respondents were collected to test the linguistic features of texting. SMS are more deviated from Standard English than Facebook chat texts...

The authors believe that English used in texting causes a lack of comprehension for English speakers, learners, and texters. Wei, Xian-hai and Jiang (2008:3) declare "In Netspeak, there are some newly-created vocabularies, which people cannot comprehend them either from their partial pronunciation or from their figures." Crystal (2007:23) claims; "variation causes problems of comprehension and acceptability. If you speak or write differently from the way I do, we may fail to understand each other." In this paper, the authors conducted a questionnaire at Aligarh Muslim University to ninety respondents from five different Faculties and four different levels. To measure respondents' comprehension of English texting, the authors gave the respondents abbreviations used by texters and asked them to write the full forms of the abbreviations. The authors found that many abbreviations were not understood, which suggested that most of the respondents did not understand and did not use these abbreviations.

It was born in the Indian soil and was a product of an intimate interaction between the linguistic currents of Indo-Aryan and Perso-Arabic groups. By the end of the 12 th century AD, when the Muslims, comprising the Turks, the Afghans, and the Iranians, entered (North) India, they brought with them a new linguistic current or a new linguistic tradition known as the Perso-Arabic tradition, primarily exemplified in the orthographic system of the Urdu language. 3 One important feature of the socio-political location of Urdu in independent India is the culturally accepted relationship of its "sisterhood" with Hindi, a unique pairing which is not held to be shared by other related Indian languages. This relationship between Hindi and Urdu shows how interesting things can happen when a shared linguistic domain is made a site for identity politics. Historically, the Hindu-Muslim antagonism has not only generated tension between Hindi and Urdu, between the conceded response of the non-committed and communally untainted speakers, on the one hand, and the calculated response of the demographers and the fanaticists committed to divisiveness, on the other hand, it has also contributed to the association of the two languages with specified social roles and group identities-Hindi as Hindu, Urdu as Muslim (King 1984; Hasnain and Rajyashree [forthcoming]; Matin, Mathur and Hasnain 2001; Sonntag 2001).

Certainly language teaching has made students achieve the desired goal of learning a language, through its different methods and approaches – learning to speak, read, write and understand a language. But it has not become a source of empowerment to the student. None of the methods used in language teaching teaches us how to develop an understanding of possible discoursal functions of the linguistic features. Neither they teach students about the relationship between language and power, nor do they make any attempt to relate language teaching to the social and political life of the students. This paper provides a theoretical exploration of discourse perspective to language teaching. Before we go into providing a theoretical exploration of discourse perspective to language teaching, it is important to make our position clear with regard to the notion of “discourse”. Here discourse is understood n...
