The adsorption of polyethyleneglycol-400 (PEG-400) on zeolites NaA, CaA, NaX and NaY have been in... more The adsorption of polyethyleneglycol-400 (PEG-400) on zeolites NaA, CaA, NaX and NaY have been investigated by using FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analyses. The spectral data have indicated that the source of adsorption of the PEG-400 on the mentioned zeolites is the interaction between the (OH) group of the liquid adsorbent and the surface silanol groups of the zeolites by means of a hydrogen bond. Shortly, the PEG binds with the silanol groups through the hydrogen bonding where the ethereal oxygen acts as a hydrogen bond accepter. A part of the PEG molecule remains adsorbed on the surface and the rest part remains protruded. So, the most of the silanol groups on the zeolites are masked by the PEG-400.

Seven plants which are used in Turkish folk medicine were studied for possible hepatoprotective e... more Seven plants which are used in Turkish folk medicine were studied for possible hepatoprotective effects. These plants are Carduus acanthoides and C. nutans (Asteraceae), Cichorium intybus (Asteraceae), Fumaria asepalae and F. 6ailantii (Fumariaceae), Gentiana oli6ieri (Gentianaceae) and Plantago lanceolata (Plantaginaceae). Stems, bracts and receptaculum of Cynara scolymus were used as natural reference drugs. Effects of the ethanolic extracts were studied using the carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats. The extracts of F. 6ailantii and G. oli6ieri significantly prevented the elevation of plasma and hepatic malondialdehyde formation (evidence of lipid peroxidation) as well as enzyme levels (AST and ALT) in acute liver injury, which might be ascribed to their potent hepatoprotective activity. Liver sections were also studied histopathologically to confirm the biochemical results.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dissociative disorders among ... more Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dissociative disorders among emergency psychiatric admissions. Method: Forty-three of the 97 consecutive outpatients admitted to the psychiatric emergency unit of a university hospital were screened using the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES). Seventeen (39.5% of the 43 evaluated) patients with a DES score above 25.0 were then interviewed with the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule and the Structured Clinical Interview for Dissociative Disorders. Results: Fifteen emergency unit patients (34.9% of the 43 evaluated participants) were diagnosed as having a dissociative disorder. Six (14.0%) patients had dissociative identity disorder, 6 (14.0%) had dissociative disorder not otherwise specified, and 3 (7.0%) had dissociative amnesia. The average DES score of dissociative patients was 43.7. A majority of them had comorbid major depression, somatization disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Most of the patients with dissociative disorder reported auditory hallucinations, symptoms associated with psychogenic amnesia, flashback experiences, and childhood abuse and/or neglect. Conclusions: Dissociative disorders constitute one of the diagnostic groups with high relevance in emergency psychiatry. D

To assess bone regeneration in critical sized defects in the rabbit calvarium, filled with the bo... more To assess bone regeneration in critical sized defects in the rabbit calvarium, filled with the bone substitute calcium phosphate cement. Circular bone defects (8mm) were made in both parietal bones of 10 rabbits. One of the defects was filled with the calcium phosphate cement, and the other received autogenous bone harvested from the calvaria. The animals were killed at 3 or 6 weeks (n=5). Data analysis included qualitative assessment of the calvarial specimens and histomorphometric analysis was used to quantify the amount of new bone within the defects. The microscopic analysis of the samples showed bone healing with both calcium phosphate cement and autogenous bone graft. Data obtained from the histomorphometric analysis were statistically analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's test. Data analysis showed that the autogenous bone graft had significantly more new bone compared with calcium phosphate cement at 3 and 6 weeks. Calcium phosphate cement at 6 weeks presented similar results to autogenous bone at 3 weeks. Both treatments presented an increase in bone healing with time. Treatments allowed bone regeneration that increased with time, however surgical cavities treated with the autogenous graft had more bone formation than those with calcium phosphate cement.

The mechanism by which Hcy induces atherosclerosis is not fully understood.
