The results of the phytochemical study revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, saponins and proteins. Application of all the three extracts exhibited significant inhibition of CFA (Complete Freund’s Adjuvant) induced rat paw edema when compared with the arthritic control group. These findings seem to justify the use of the plant in traditional Indian medicine in the treatment of inflammation, including arthritic conditions.

The seed extract has been extensively investigated in several laboratories for their neuropharmacological effects and a number of reports are available confirming their nootropic action. In addition, researchers have evaluated the anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant and other pharmacological effects of CP preparations/extracts. Therefore, in view of the important activities performed by this plant, investigation must be continued in the recently observed actions described in this paper. Moreover, clinical studies have to be encouraged, also to evidence any side effects and possible interactions between this herbal medicine and synthetic drugs.

Easy fatigability is not limited to uncontrolled diabetes however is comorbid with psychological, medical, metabolic, and chronic complications like insulin-resistance, glucose intolerance, and obesity. Methods: We analyzed the effect of lifestyle modification involving physical exercise and intake of omega 3 fatty acid-rich fish oil on insulin resistance and diabetic fatigue. For the same, diabetes was induced using single dose streptozocin injection in rats fed with a high-fat diet and were treated with fish oil alone and in combination with exercise training. Blood glucose levels, glucose tolerance, lipid profile, insulin levels, oxidative stress and glycogen content were monitored in rats exposed to swimming exercise and fatigue test. Results: Alone fish oil could improve symptoms of diabetic complications; however, the combination intervention of exercise and oral administration of fish oil s...

The present study aims at studying the Pharmacognosy (morphology and microscopy) of the leaves of Callicarpa arborea. Macroscopic characters were observed and noted down. The leaf was found to be ovate, dorsiventral with reticulate venation, 35-42 cm in length,15-16 cm in breadth; upper surface dark green ,smooth. Lower surface is light green, velvety with prominent midrib. Base is asymmetric and apex is acute. Microscopy studies were carried out by taking hand cut transverse sections as well as powder using Phloroglucinol- hydrochloric acid as the staining agent. Nikon photomicrograph was used to document the results. The transverse section exhibited the typical arrangement of the dorsiventral leaf with the midrib and the lamina region with abundant candelabra trichomes. Powder Microscopic: characters observed were the candelabra trichomes, calcium oxalate crystals, wavy walled epidermis, stoma very few surrounded by an indefinite number of epidermal cells, xylem and phloem elements. Conclusions: The Pharmacognostic study (morphology and microscopy) will help in the identification and standardization of the plant drug.

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the hydro-alcoholic (70% alcohol in water) extract of its leaves. The zone of inhibition by cup plate method was determined at concentrations (100, 200, and 300 mg/ml) and compared to that of the standards-Amikacin (0.01mg/ml) for antibacterial and Fluconazole (0.01mg/ml) for antifungal. The test organisms used were Gram Positive bacteria -Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Gram Negative bacteria- Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, fungal strains: Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium chrysogenum.Fluconazole exhibited a zone of inhibition of 51-52 mm and the extracts: 29-34 mm against fungal strains. Amikacin exhibited a zone of inhibition of 42 mm in gram negative organisms and 45 mm in gram positive organisms, whereas the extracts exhibited a zone of inhibition of 24-28 mm. From the above results, it can be concluded that the hydro alcoholic extract of the leaves of Callicarpa arborea exhibited significant antifungal activity and, antibacterial activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, in a dose dependant manner as compared to that of the standard.

Hence the search for an Ideal anti -microbial continues in the plant kingdom. Plants have always been a rich source of antimicrobials: turmeric, and tulsi to name a few. Several Ipomoea species have been found to possess antimicrobial properties. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the hydro alcoholic extract (70%alcohol in water) of its Arial parts of one such species, Ipomoea hederacea (Ivy leaf morning glory) by determination of the zone of inhibition by the cup plate method. It was found that Ipomoea hederacea (IPO) exhibited moderately significant antifungal activities against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium chrysogenum and, antibacterial activity against both gram positive bacteria, that is, Gram Positive bacteria -Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis Gram Negative bacteria- Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as compared to that of the standard.

Materials and Mathods: The petroleum ether, chloroform, alcoholic extracts of the Saussurea lappa roots in the presence of chemically active compounds by standard methods and evaluated for their antiarthritic activity by using Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) induced rat model. Results: The results revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, saponins and tannins. Application of all the three extracts exhibited significant (p<0.01) edema inhibition when compared with the arthritic control group. Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that Saussurea lappa root extracts are endowed with effective antiarthritic activity. These findings seem to justify the use of the plant in traditional Indian medicine in the treatment of inflammation, including arthritic conditions.
