Begun in 1992 under the visionary leadership of Paul Brantley, JRCE has played a key role in the scholarship of Christian education. Over the years our readership has grown. As more scholars learned of the journal, the volume of manuscripts submitted for consideration has increased as well. Thus through the years JRCE has grown stronger as scholars of Christian education ‘‘flexed’’ their scholarly muscles by writing, reviewing, and editing in the journal. As editors have changed, so has the journal. Lyndon ‘‘Jerry’’ Furst negotiated to move JRCE from a ‘‘self-published’’ journal distributed by School of Education at Andrews University. Under his leadership JRCE moved to a partnership with Information Age Publishing. This change freed the editor to focus on manuscript acquisition and quality. After I was named Editor, we moved again to our current partnership with Routledge=Taylor & Francis. With each step along the path, JRCE has gained strength and improved its visibility (and thus its impact) in the scholarly community. We are now ready for the next step in the growth of JRCE. Beginning in 2009 JRCE will include three issues per year rather than two. This has been made possible by many factors: marketing, presence at major conferences, and networking. However the two most important factors that will allow us to move to three issues per year are the current volume of quality manuscripts

Periodically a member has posed the question, ‘‘Is it time for us to disband, now that we have achieved our goal?’’ This question is only meaningful in the context of the organization’s birth. ARPE was formed in the 1960s in an effort to provide presentation and publication opportunities for researchers in the field of private education—a field that was less than a stepchild in educational research at that time. On one side of the discussion are those who point to increased opportunities now for both presentation and publication for those scholars who focus on private education. On the other side of the argument are those who believe the broader field will simply revert to its previous status should private education scholars discontinue their work as researchers and advocates in the field. The nascence of JRCE was initiated by similar concerns to those that led to the founding of ARPE. Two decades ago, limited peer-reviewed publishing opportunities were available for researchers of Christian schools, particularly for researchers in the Protestant or Evangelical traditions. Since it’s founding, JRCE

In the case of three major world religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam these long-standing conflicts can be characterized informally as a family feud. All three religions claim the patriarch Abraham as their spiritual father and founder. All claim to worship the same monotheistic God. Throughout history conflict has often raged as each group tried to achieve the ascendency in one particular part of the world or another through the union of governmental and ecclesiastic power. What would happen, however, if educators could transcend the ambitions for power that are often evident within nations or regions where these three Abrahamic faith traditions wield political power? What would happen when educators from these three traditions met for professional conversation and discussion? Could they get along? Could they share something of value for the ‘‘others’’ in the larger group? Could they learn from each other? It has been my privilege to annual conferences sponsored by international organizations such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies. In both of these venues it has been my pleasure to interact with scholars from all three of the major Abrahamic faith traditions, as well as a colleague from the Baha’i faith, which also traces its roots back to Abraham. In all these settings, I have found my educational colleagues to be consummate professionals who engage in discussions with one another on the topics of the papers presented, enjoy social interactions with each other during scheduled conference breaks, contribute to professional

Added to the mix are some of their professors who served as co-authors as well as a few established authors who names you will recognize if you remain current with journals that publish research on Christian education. In the area of theory development, Schultz and Swezey address the key issue of worldview. They present a thought-provoking conceptual research piece which encourages us to look at worldview in a more robust and holistic manner. While this article is a theoretical, by its very nature it is invested with potentially profound implications for the practice of Christian education. Our section on PK-12 education leads off with a well-conceived and implemented qualitative study focused on home education. Hoelzle’s study concentrates on values transmission and the transition into adulthood in the context of home education. His findings are enlightening and informative for home educators. However, practitioners and researchers in more formal, traditional Christian schools will find insights in his article that will inform their practice as well. Fleming and Parker present a rigorous analysis of Newbery Award winning books from the 1920s to the present. Their analysis focused on character traits promoted in these books and evaluated them for their appropriateness for use in Christian schools. Whether or not you agree completely with their findings and recommendations, you will find their work stimulating. After reading this article you are likely never to think about selection of literature for your classes in quite the same manner again.

I use analysis of one racially charged word – nigger, the “N-word” – to highlight the inescapable influence and still almost larger-than-life impact of America’s colonial heritage 200 years after independence. My narrative begins with my elementary education in a rural, de facto segregated school six miles outside of town. It then moves to my in-town, integrated junior high school experience for grades 7-9. Interspersed with my narrative are narratives from other family members, key sources of indirect knowledge (Jansen, 2009) that shaped my perceptions of life in the post-colonial South.
Analysis of my narrative is from my perspective as a “colonial descendent” – a person with direct descent from European colonizers of the United States. I explore four postcolonial themes: race, identification, difference, language, and the sacred. These themes are discussed from my learning experiences as a child in the American South during the 1960s and 1970s. My paper concludes with the identification and clarification of strategies and pathways that helped me successfully navigate postcolonial issues and conflicts. This includes ways I feel I have been able to move through and beyond the world created by the “N-word,” as well as ways I have not yet been able to emancipate myself from my racialized roots.

Research paper thumbnail of Engaging Diverse STEM Students in Transformative Learning

For the past two decades, researchers and educators in science, technology, engineering, and math... more For the past two decades, researchers and educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields have been searching for strategies that increase success of diverse students. This paper presents a grounded theory developed from two STEM programs that have documented unusual success with diverse students at Andrews University, a small Midwestern faith-based university. This success with under-represented minorities and under-prepared students has been accomplished despite the fact that faculty members described their teaching methods as “traditional.” This paper presents a substantive discussion of the research methods used to develop generalizable theory from a unique case and the resulting theoretical model that emerged. This holistic model consists of six core process clusters that explain the success of underrepresented minorities and under-prepared students in the programs studied. These process clusters include Fostering a Student-focused Ethos, Embracing the Teaching Role, Maintaining Support Structures, Nurturing Positive Relationships, Engaging Students in Learning, and Empowering Student Transformation. This paper identifies what facets within these clusters, and with what relative significance, contributed to achievement of outcomes by the students who were under-prepared in high school and/or were from traditionally underrepresented groups. STEM educators at the undergraduate level are free to abstract useful lessons from this unique case and its resultant theory to influence teaching practice and student learning in their own departments.

This paper presents results from a grounded theory study of two STEM programs that have documented unusual success with diverse students at a small Midwestern university. This has been accomplished despite the fact that faculty members describe their teaching methods as "traditional." A model consisting of seven core processes is emerging to explain the success of underrepresented minorities and under-prepared students in these programs. This paper focuses on one of these processes: Nurturing Positive Relationships. These findings have the potential to inform STEM education practices in higher education.
