Fifty six percent of the mothers reported that their children had taken one or more medicines during a two-week period; 29.5% of the products were fixed combinations of three or more components, (which was taken as an indicator of poor quality). Almost 10% of the children had used a given medicine for one month or more. Aspirin, combinations of vitamins and mineral supplements and cough and cold combinations were the medicines most frequently used. The commonest reasons for taking medicines were colds, fevers and lack of appetite. The latter was the commonest reason for longterm use and also for that of combinations. Physicians' prescriptions were responsible for more than 60% of the medicines used (including dipyrone and appetite stimulants). In all social classes the consumption was above 50%. Children classified in the fifth quintile of family income consumed 14% more medicines than those in the first quintile. Children with two or more older siblings consumed 12% less medicines than the elder ones. Malnourished children, according to weight for age, consumed 30% more medicines than the well-nourished. Children consulting a doctor four times or more during the three-month period before the interview were using two times more medicines than children who had had no consultation during the same period. The frequent use of aspirin is a reason for concern as it has been associated with Reye's syndrome in children. It is also important to stress the danger of poisoning resulting from medicines available at home. Another noteworthy aspect concerns the messages transmitted to the children regarding the use of medicines for almost every conceivable reason which could possibly lead to medicine or illicit drug addiction.

Given the importance of sand fly salivary proteins as potent immunogens obligatorily co-deposited during transmission of Leishmania parasites, their inclusion in an anti-Leishmania vaccine has been investigated in the last few decades. In this context, we previously immunized dogs with a vaccine composed of L. braziliensis antigens plus saponin as the adjuvant and sand fly salivary gland extract (LBSapSal vaccine). This vaccine elicited an increase in both antisaliva and anti-Leishmania IgG isotypes, higher counts of specific circulating CD8 + T cells, and high NO production.

All these substances were tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by a microdilution method. Staphylococcus aureus, Xanthomonas campestris var. vesicatoria and Ralstonia solanacearum were most sensitive to n-propyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate, n-pentyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6methylbenzoate and n-hexyl 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate with MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) values ranging from 62.5 to 7.8 µg⋅mL -1 . These results showed that homologation in carbon chain may lead to compounds with more pronunced activities.

An energy-restricted (pair-fed) group was given the same food as the animals in the control group, but the amounts of food consumed by both PF and PR were about the same. The body weight and serum albumin concentration of PR and PF dams were significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of the controls. The PR group had a significant increase in serum-free triiodothyronine (FT 3 ) concentration, 24-hr mammary gland and milk radioiodine (I 131 ) uptake (67%, 278%, and 200%, respectively) as compared with the controls. On the other hand, those animals had a significantly lower serum-free thyroxine (FT 4 ) concentration and 2-and 24-hr thyroid I 131 uptake (67%, 64%, and 74%, respectively). Protein malnutrition during lactation did not alter thyroid or liver 5-deiodinase activity significantly. However, PF dams had a significantly lower (25%) thyroid 5-deiodinase activity. These data suggest that protein-restricted lactating dams had an adaptive change in the thyroid function, which could be important to increase the transference of iodine or triiodothyronine through the milk to their pups and prevent sequelae of neonatal hypothyroidism.

From parturition until weaning, Wistar rats were separated into three groups: (C) control group, with free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 23% protein; protein-energy restricted (PER) group, with free access to an isoenergy and protein-restricted diet containing 8% protein; and energy-restricted (ER) group, receiving standard laboratory diet in restricted quantities, which were calculated according to the mean ingestion of the PER group. All pups were killed at weaning, corresponding to 21 days post partum. Compared with the C group, body weights (CZ48G2 . 3 g; PERZ20G1 . 3 g; ERZ25 . 4G0 . 9 g; P!0 . 01) and testicular weights (CZ0 . 15G0 . 02 g, PERZ0 . 05G0 . 01 g, ERZ0 . 06G 0 . 02 g, P!0 . 001) of both PER and ER groups were lower.

Three focal groups were proposed. The first focal group was composed by first-year-students of the technical clothing course; the second group, by women who have graduated in the same course; and the third group, by women from the previous two groups. The transcriptions of the group discussions were submitted to discourse analysis. The analyses suggest that this profession feminization and the feminine work devaluation are related to the classical division public-private. Perceiving feminization as a product of social constructions may hinders the organization of a working women movement, including the clothing sector, in searching of adequate remuneration and acknowledgment of their work.

The objective of our study was to evaluate of community of the soil fauna Coleoptera, collected bimonthly through pitfall trap, from August 2003 to August 2004. A total of 10,820 specimens from 24 families of Coleoptera were captured, but Nitidulidae (4,782 individuals), Curculionidae (3,176), Scarabaeidae (2,019) and Staphylinidae (326) were considered abundant families. According to the trophic guild, the collected individuals can be divided into detritivores (4,802 specimens), herbivores (3,218), decomposers (2,019), predators (621) and fungivoros (160). These results indicate no dominance of a single trophic group, however, the high occurrence of detritivores (44.4%), herbivores (29.7%) and decomposers (18.7%) was registered. About 61.8% (6,685 individuals) were captured during October 2003 to March 2004, a rainy period, and 38.2% (4,135) during the dry period indicating a pronounced seasonal difference in the relative abundance of individuals sampled. The high frequency of individuals was observed during the October and December, 2003, and March, 2004.
