Intro (original) (raw)

I've been in this community for quite some time, but never posted an intro. When I first joined I HAD no training subjects as I was petless (much to my disappointment). Last May I joined the ranks of dog owners, so I thought maybe it was time to introduce myself.

In which country/state are you located? I'm from Syracuse, NY (USA)

What is your experience with training animals? Just my own dog, along with a LOT of reading on dog psychology and training theories.

What sort of pets do you own? Just one dog. She's a border collie/lab mix, about 3 years old. Her name is Dahlia (aka Ferocious D).

Which sort of training have you found works best for you and your animals? Positive, reward-based training. My dog is very sensitive. A sharp word or a tug on the leash (and there was some of that in the beginning when I was getting a bit frustrated) and she shuts down. I've learned over the past 9 months that I have to be gentle with her, stay in tune with her, and reward her often with treats, praise, and love.

Are your animals involved in trialing/competition and if so have they attained any titles? Not yet. We've gone through basic and intermediate classes in obedience. We're going for the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) test this April and then after that we're looking to get involved in agility.

Which forms of training are you interested in exploring? Positive training of any sort, agility training
