Thin and easily erasable, but Moemi drew it anyway. Somehow it made a difference to see that name crossed out. She’d never be able to erase the damage that he’d done, but at least she could blot out his name. Every diary entry now read “I said good morning to

Niimai today” or “Does Niimai even see me?”

Then she came to a page where she’d scrawled in huge, looping letters, “I love Niimai!”

She drew one more line, then. Through “love.”

And squeezing the pen tight in her trembling hand, she wrote, “hate.”
