Ozet \r\nOrgutlerin faaliyet gosterdikleri ulkelerdeki insanlarin davranislari ve sosyo-\r\nkultu... more Ozet \r\nOrgutlerin faaliyet gosterdikleri ulkelerdeki insanlarin davranislari ve sosyo-\r\nkulturel degerleri orgutleri etkileyen cevresel faktorlerdendir. Bu calismada \r\ncalisanlarin davranislarini etkileyen en onemli etkenlerden birisi olan isletmelerin \r\nbulundugu ve faaliyet gosterdikleri kulturun, calisanlarin iletisim sureclerine etkisi \r\nincelenmistir. Bununla beraber isletmelerin orgut kulturlerinin olusumunda icinde \r\nbulunduklari toplumun kulturunden ne derece etkilendikleri degerlendirilmistir. \r\n Kuresellesme surecinden en cok etkilenen sektorlerden birisi olmasindan \r\ndolayi bu calismada gida sektorunde faaliyet gosteren isletmeler secilmistir. \r\nIncelenen isletmelerden birisi Turkiye’de, digeri ise Amerika Birlesik Devletleri’nde \r\nfaaliyet gostermektedir. Calismada isletmelerde gozlem ve her isletmeden iki \r\ncalisanla gerceklestirilen mulakatlar yoluyla veri toplanmistir. Bu uygulamanin \r\nsonucunda isletme calisanlarinin iletisim sureclerinin bulunduklari kulturden buyuk \r\noranda etkilendigi gorulmustur. Bireyci kulturun ozelliklerini tasiyan ABD’de \r\ncalisanlarin birbirleriyle daha mesafeli olduklari ve iletisimlerinde daha dogrudan \r\nolmayi tercih ettikleri belirlenmistir. Diger taraftan toplulukcu kulturun ozelliklerine \r\nsahip olan Turkiye’de ise calisanlarin birbirleriyle daha yakin olmayi tercih ettikleri \r\nve birbirlerine karsi itibarlarini korumaya ozen gosterdikleri gorulmustur. Ayrica bu \r\ncalismada isletmelerin orgut kulturlerini olustururken bulunduklari kulturden kendi \r\ncikarlari dogrultusunda farklilasmaya calistiklari da dikkat cekmistir. Bu calismanin \r\nsonucunda bir isletmenin diger ulkelerde basarili bir sekilde faaliyet gosterebilmesi \r\nicin o ulkenin kulturel yapisini analiz ederek bazi yapisal degisiklikleri \r\ngerceklestirmesi gerektigi ortaya cikarilmistir.\r\n\r\nAbstract \r\nEmployer’s behaviors and socio-cultural values are important environmental \r\nfactors that affect the success of organizations. In this study, the impact of culture, \r\nwhich is one of the most important factors that influences the personal behaviors, on \r\nthe communication of employers was investigated. Moreover, the degree of impact \r\nof general culture in which the organization is present on the organizational culture \r\nwas assessed. \r\n As food industry is one of the industries that are greatly affected by \r\nglobalization, two food companies that are operating in two different cultures were \r\ninvestigated. The analyzed companies in this study were located in Turkey and in the \r\nUnited States. The data is collected by conducting interviews with two employees \r\nfrom each company and observations. As a result of this study, it was observed that \r\nthe communication of employees is highly dependent on the culture that the \r\ncompanies were located at. Employees in the US, which showed the characteristics \r\nof individualistic cultures, were more distant from each other and preferred direct \r\ncommunication with each other. On the other hand, in Turkey, which is known to be \r\na collectivistic culture, employees prefer to be closer to each other and pay special \r\nattention to save each other’s faces. In addition, it was observed that the companies \r\nwere trying to adjust their organizational culture for improving the efficiency of their \r\nemployees. As a result of this study, it was evident that it is crucial for a company to \r\nanalyze the culture of the new location and make necessary structural changes to be \r\nsuccessful in another culture.\r\n

Constantly focused on the role of competencies and resources, firms’ strategic management teams a... more Constantly focused on the role of competencies and resources, firms’ strategic management teams are becoming increasingly interested in discovering an effective way of managing the competencies that they possess. In high-tech sectors, these competencies have a direct impact on the firm’s future competitive positioning. In other sectors, technological competencies will determine the renewal of product lines. This article examines how firms manage their proprietary research and development programmes and how they succeed in establishing a co-operative relationship with their environment. Our background research includes forty interviews conducted in both the US and Europe.

This paper examines Turkish women's employment experience combining foci on gender and Turkey. Tu... more This paper examines Turkish women's employment experience combining foci on gender and Turkey. Turkish practice is educational for both practitioners, and academicians in the field. A review of sectoral employment data is given. In addition, a range of comparative emphases with other nation states is included. This paper has presented a widely based discussion about the subject which may offer a basis of understanding for both managers and scholars. Despite evidence of increased international, and national push for equality, there needs to be further legal and institutional support for women in employment in Turkey. In order for Turkish government to place equality issues in the operational, and strategic mechanisms of the industry, adopting the EU legislative frameworks in sex equality may be a solution. Özet: Türkiye'de Kadının Đstihdamı: Eğilimler ve Gelecek Beklentileri Bu çalışmada temel amaç, ülkemizde kadın istihdamında yaşanan deneyimi tarihsel bir perspektifte incelemek ve sektörel istihdam verilerini birçok ülkenin verileriyle karşılaştırarak farklılık ve benzerlikleri saptamaktır.Toplumsal cinsiyet konusunda çalışan akademisyenler açısından Türkiye örneğinin önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir. Çalışma hayatında kadın istihdamının arttırılmasına yönelik olarak önerilen stratejik hedeflerin gerçekleştirilmesinin, Avrupa Birliği yasal mevzuatına uyum sürecini hızlandıracağı ve bu çalışmada uluslararası karşılaştırmalarla özetlenen sorunları ortadan kaldıracağı düşünülmektedir.

This article critically compares the institutions and procedures for the employment services of G... more This article critically compares the institutions and procedures for the employment services of Great Britain (GB) and Turkey. The similarities and differences of tvvo employment organisations, the Department for Education and Employment in GB and the Turkish Employment Organisation, are examined. Data is collected in field study from these organisations, based in London and Ankara, through intervievvs and observation techniques. Field study in London is fınanced by the World Bank. After briefly revievving the background of the organisations, the article then examines the legal framevvork and the criteria on vvhich comparisons can be based: establishment, organisational structure, activities, tasks and duties. As a conclusion, public employment policy implications for both countries are presen ted and evaluated.

Downsizing is the systematic reduction of work force which is often used during economic crisis i... more Downsizing is the systematic reduction of work force which is often used during economic crisis in order to increase productivity, efficiency, profitability and competitiveness of firms. In literature many studies examine the positive and negative effects of downsizing on firms. The economic crisis in Turkey that emerged in November 2000 and February 2001 caused downsizing in banking sector broadly. The main aim of the study is to examine the relationship between downsizing and financial performance of Turkish banks. The scope of the study is deposit accepting banks operating in Turkey. There is a great amount of decrease in the number of employees working at banks between 2000 and 2003. In this study, the pre and after downsizing performance of the banks is measured by using Paired Samples T-Test. According to the hypothesis test results, there is no significant difference between the profitability of Turkish banks before and after downsizing. Four of the performance variables in hypotheses did not reveal any significant relation between downsizing and performance. Turkish banks could not achieve the intended results by downsizing between 2000 and 2003. In order to increase performance of the Turkish banks, it is necessary for the bank managers to consider alternative tools of Human Resources Management. Instead of downsizing different alternative methods such as reducing work hours/weeks, voluntary resignation, early retirement programs, low wages, natural attrition, salary cuts, mandatory vacation, voluntary sabbaticals, redeployment, freezing recruitment, disengaging contractors and other flexible workers, reducing overtime, secondments, career breaks and introducing more flexible working patterns such as job sharing and part-time work can be realized.

Although participation rate of female undergraduates has increased significantly, the participation of women in academia has not increased by the same proportion. Moreover, women experience several challenges. This research examines the participation of academic women in higher education (HE) in Portugal and Turkey. Education statistics for these countries show that women continue to lag behind men in academia specifically in science, mathematics, and engineering. Also, education stereotyping continues; with women relegated to so-called women's disciplines and programs in engineering, physics, and the so-called hard sciences continue to be dominated by men. This paper examines the gender effect on academic career development and the main differences in male and female academic careers to determine the real impact of gender on the development of academic careers.

Bu arastirmanin temel amaci, insanin cevresinden gelen baski ve taleplerle basarili sekilde bas e... more Bu arastirmanin temel amaci, insanin cevresinden gelen baski ve taleplerle basarili sekilde bas edebilmesinde bireye yardimci olacak, kisisel, duygusal ve sosyal yeterlilik ve beceriler dizini olarak tanimlanan duygusal zekanin agirlikli genel not ortalamasi ile ifade edilen akademik basariya etkisini ortaya koymaktir. Ayrica cesitli demografik faktorlerin duygusal zekaya etkisi belirlenmeye calisilmistir. Bu dogrultuda ogrencilerin universite egitimine baslamadan once yasamakta olduklari cografi bolge ve yerlesim birimi, anne ve babalarinin egitim duzeyleri, ailelerinin gelir duzeyi, sahip olduklari kardes sayisi ve annelerinin mesleki durumu ile ogrencilerin duygusal zekalari arasindaki iliski incelenmistir. Arastirma 2009-10 ogretim yili guz doneminde Abant Izzet Baysal Universitesi Iktisadi ve Idari Bilimler Fakultesi Isletme Bolumu 2., 3. ve 4. sinif ogrencileri uzerinde yapilmis, Bar-on Duygusal Zeka Envanteri kullanilarak duygusal zeka duzeyleri belirlenmistir.Demografik faktorler ile duygusal zeka arasindaki iliskinin belirlenmesi icin yapilan analizler sonucunda isletme bolumu ogrencilerinin duygusal zeka duzeylerinin, ogrencilerin ailelerinin gelirine ve annelerinin mesleki durumuna gore farklilik gosterdigi saptanmistir. Diger demografik faktorlere gore bir farklilik saptanmamistir. Duygusal zeka ile akademik basari arasinda iliskinin olup olmadiginin belirlenmesi icin yapilan analizler sonucunda isletme bolumu ogrencilerinin toplam duygusal zeka puanlari, kisilerarasi iliskiler ve uyumluluk ana boyutu puanlari ile akademik basari arasinda zayif pozitif iliskinin oldugu saptanmistir. Kisisel beceriler, stres yonetimi ve genel ruh durumu ana boyutlari puanlari ile akademik basari arasinda anlamli iliski saptanmamistir.AbstractThe main objective of this dissertation is to observe the effect of emotional intelligence which defined as an array of noncognitive capabilities, compentencies, and skills that influence one?s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures on academic achievement. Additionaly the effect of various demographic factors on emotional intelligence examined. For this purpose, the relationship between geographical regions of university student?s before they came to Bolu, population of their birth place, education level of their parents, income level of the family, number of children of the family, job of the student?s mother and emotional intelligence level of the students. Research covers 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students of Business Administration Department of School of Economics and Administrative Sciences of Abant Izzet Baysal University. Emotional Intelligence level of university students were measured by Bar-On?s Emotional Intelligence Inventory.Results suggest that emotional intelligence level of students of Business Administration Department differs for the level of family income and mother?s job. There?s no statistically significant difference found between other demographic factors and emotional intelligence level. Additional tests on sublevels of emotional intelligence and academic achievement suggest that there is statistically significant weak correlation between emotional intelligence, interpersonal relations and adaptivity main sublevels and academic achievement. There is no relationship found between personal abilities, stress management and general mental condition main sublevels and academic achievement.

Makalede, sekiz ulkenin karsilastirildigi kulturlerarasi bir arastirmanin Turkiye bulgulari sunulmaktadir. Arastirma kapsaminda Turkiye’nin yani sira Avustralya, Irlanda, Yeni Zelanda, Portekiz, Guney Afrika, Isvec ve Ingiltere yer almaktadir. The main argument of this study is that cultural values have a significant effect on gender and gender discrimination. The main aim in this research is to find out the effects of organizational culture on work pressure on female employees and the relationship between organizational culture types and occupational pressure variables. The research was conducted in the Turkish manufacturing industry. Organizational culture construct was used to test the hypothesis. This stage was based on 236 responses received from sample of 384 companies. Data was generated through questionnaires and was analyzed using SPSS. The findings show that the constructs are reliable and exhibit validity. Employees in the US, which showed the characteristics \r\nof individualistic cultures, were more distant from each other and preferred direct \r\ncommunication with each other. On the other hand, in Turkey, which is known to be \r\na collectivistic culture, employees prefer to be closer to each other and pay special \r\nattention to save each other’s faces. In addition, it was observed that the companies \r\nwere trying to adjust their organizational culture for improving the efficiency of their \r\nemployees. As a result of this study, it was evident that it is crucial for a company to \r\nanalyze the culture of the new location and make necessary structural changes to be \r\nsuccessful in another culture.\r\n

This article examines how firms manage their proprietary research and development programmes and how they succeed in establishing a co-operative relationship with their environment. Our background research includes forty interviews conducted in both the US and Europe.

Tu... more This paper examines Turkish women's employment experience combining foci on gender and Turkey. Turkish practice is educational for both practitioners, and academicians in the field. A review of sectoral employment data is given. In addition, a range of comparative emphases with other nation states is included. This paper has presented a widely based discussion about the subject which may offer a basis of understanding for both managers and scholars. Despite evidence of increased international, and national push for equality, there needs to be further legal and institutional support for women in employment in Turkey. In order for Turkish government to place equality issues in the operational, and strategic mechanisms of the industry, adopting the EU legislative frameworks in sex equality may be a solution. Özet: Türkiye'de Kadının Đstihdamı: Eğilimler ve Gelecek Beklentileri Bu çalışmada temel amaç, ülkemizde kadın istihdamında yaşanan deneyimi tarihsel bir perspektifte incelemek ve sektörel istihdam verilerini birçok ülkenin verileriyle karşılaştırarak farklılık ve benzerlikleri saptamaktır.Toplumsal cinsiyet konusunda çalışan akademisyenler açısından Türkiye örneğinin önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir. The similarities and differences of tvvo employment organisations, the Department for Education and Employment in GB and the Turkish Employment Organisation, are examined. Data is collected in field study from these organisations, based in London and Ankara, through intervievvs and observation techniques. Field study in London is fınanced by the World Bank. After briefly revievving the background of the organisations, the article then examines the legal framevvork and the criteria on vvhich comparisons can be based: establishment, organisational structure, activities, tasks and duties. As a conclusion, public employment policy implications for both countries are presen ted and evaluated.

Downsizing is the systematic reduction of work force which is often used during economic crisis i... more Downsizing is the systematic reduction of work force which is often used during economic crisis in order to increase productivity, efficiency, profitability and competitiveness of firms. In literature many studies examine the positive and negative effects of downsizing on firms. The economic crisis in Turkey that emerged in November 2000 and February 2001 caused downsizing in banking sector broadly. The main aim of the study is to examine the relationship between downsizing and financial performance of Turkish banks. The scope of the study is deposit accepting banks operating in Turkey. There is a great amount of decrease in the number of employees working at banks between 2000 and 2003. In this study, the pre and after downsizing performance of the banks is measured by using Paired Samples T-Test. According to the hypothesis test results, there is no significant difference between the profitability of Turkish banks before and after downsizing. Four of the performance variables in hypotheses did not reveal any significant relation between downsizing and performance. Turkish banks could not achieve the intended results by downsizing between 2000 and 2003. In order to increase performance of the Turkish banks, it is necessary for the bank managers to consider alternative tools of Human Resources Management. Instead of downsizing different alternative methods such as reducing work hours/weeks, voluntary resignation, early retirement programs, low wages, natural attrition, salary cuts, mandatory vacation, voluntary sabbaticals, redeployment, freezing recruitment, disengaging contractors and other flexible workers, reducing overtime, secondments, career breaks and introducing more flexible working patterns such as job sharing and part-time work can be realized.

Although participation rate of female undergraduates has increased significantly, the participation of women in academia has not increased by the same proportion. Moreover, women experience several challenges. This research examines the participation of academic women in higher education (HE) in Portugal and Turkey. Education statistics for these countries show that women continue to lag behind men in academia specifically in science, mathematics, and engineering. Also, education stereotyping continues; with women relegated to so-called women's disciplines and programs in engineering, physics, and the so-called hard sciences continue to be dominated by men. This paper examines the gender effect on academic career development and the main differences in male and female academic careers to determine the real impact of gender on the development of academic careers.

Bu dogrultuda ogrencilerin universite egitimine baslamadan once yasamakta olduklari cografi bolge ve yerlesim birimi, anne ve babalarinin egitim duzeyleri, ailelerinin gelir duzeyi, sahip olduklari kardes sayisi ve annelerinin mesleki durumu ile ogrencilerin duygusal zekalari arasindaki iliski incelenmistir. Arastirma 2009-10 ogretim yili guz doneminde Abant Izzet Baysal Universitesi Iktisadi ve Idari Bilimler Fakultesi Isletme Bolumu 2., 3. ve 4. sinif ogrencileri uzerinde yapilmis, Bar-on Duygusal Zeka Envanteri kullanilarak duygusal zeka duzeyleri belirlenmistir.Demografik faktorler ile duygusal zeka arasindaki iliskinin belirlenmesi icin yapilan analizler sonucunda isletme bolumu ogrencilerinin duygusal zeka duzeylerinin, ogrencilerin ailelerinin gelirine ve annelerinin mesleki durumuna gore farklilik gosterdigi saptanmistir. Diger demografik faktorlere gore bir farklilik saptanmamistir. Kisisel beceriler, stres yonetimi ve genel ruh durumu ana boyutlari puanlari ile akademik basari arasinda anlamli iliski saptanmamistir.AbstractThe main objective of this dissertation is to observe the effect of emotional intelligence which defined as an array of noncognitive capabilities, compentencies, and skills that influence one?s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures on academic achievement. Additionaly the effect of various demographic factors on emotional intelligence examined. For this purpose, the relationship between geographical regions of university student?s before they came to Bolu, population of their birth place, education level of their parents, income level of the family, number of children of the family, job of the student?s mother and emotional intelligence level of the students. Research covers 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students of Business Administration Department of School of Economics and Administrative Sciences of Abant Izzet Baysal University. Emotional Intelligence level of university students were measured by Bar-On?s Emotional Intelligence Inventory.Results suggest that emotional intelligence level of students of Business Administration Department differs for the level of family income and mother?s job. There?s no statistically significant difference found between other demographic factors and emotional intelligence level. Additional tests on sublevels of emotional intelligence and academic achievement suggest that there is statistically significant weak correlation between emotional intelligence, interpersonal relations and adaptivity main sublevels and academic achievement. There is no relationship found between personal abilities, stress management and general mental condition main sublevels and academic achievement.

The main aim in this research is to find out the effects of organizational culture on work pressure on female employees and the relationship between organizational culture types and occupational pressure variables. The research was conducted in the Turkish manufacturing industry. Organizational culture construct was used to test the hypothesis. This stage was based on 236 responses received from sample of 384 companies. Data was generated through questionnaires and was analyzed using SPSS. The findings show that the constructs are reliable and exhibit validity. In this study, after the liberalization policies, which started in early 2000s in Turkey, performance of electricity sector has been evaluated. Electricity market liberalization reforms changed the market structure. This market change directly affected the behaviors of market agents and performance of the sector. Turkish electricity distribution market performance based on the data ensured by the primary figures in the sector are evaluated in terms of indicators such as prices, investment, capacity utilization rates, costs and profitability. In the past years, important improvements were achieved in the direction of liberalization of the sector. But key indicators of the success for the reform and liberalization indicate that performance of the electricity sector is relatively not strong. In this regard, capacity utilization ratios are not increased the cost of electricity generation and price of electricity is not decreased so far. Moreover, the institutional financial situation in sector seemed not stable. Especially, the investment, which constitutes the important goal of the reform, is not successful over the years, yet.
ÖZET
Bu çalışmada, Türkiye elektrik sektöründe 2000’li yıllarda başlatılan serbestleşme ve yeniden yapılanma çerçevesinde gerçekleştirilen uygulamalar neticesinde tamamen özelleştirilen Türkiye elektrik dağıtım sektörünün genel performansı değerlendirilmiştir. Elektrik dağıtım hizmeti bağlamında “kamu hizmeti sunumu” açısından değerlendirmeler yapılmış, genel olarak Türkiye’de hassas bir konu olan özelleştirme uygulamalarının elektrik sektöründeki yansımalarına bakılmıştır. Çalışmada, özelleştirmeler öncesi ve hemen sonrasında elektrik sektörünün performansı, sektörel kurum ve kuruluşlardan temin edilen veriler kullanılarak, fiyatlar, yatırımlar, kapasite kullanım oranları, karlılık ve maliyetler… vb. başlıklar çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiştir. Elektrik sektöründeki düzenleyici reformların başarısının temel göstergesini oluşturan sektörel performansın henüz çok da güçlenmediği görülmüştür. Bu çerçevede kapasite kullanım oranlarının istenen seviyelere erişemediği, elektrik maliyetleri ve fiyatlarında artış yaşandığı, sektörel kurumların finansal göstergelerindeki istikrarsızlığın giderilemediği izlenmiştir. Özellikle sektördeki yatırımların artırılması hususunda bu aşamada çok da başarılı olunamadığı görülmüştür.

in Ankara, Turkey. According to findings women take advantage of news, communication,
information, business support and education of ICT’s. Moreover managers use Facebook,
Twitter, and Google+ to create awareness, communicate/collaborate, gain new customers,
marketing, information gathering and networking. Finally it is found that the benefits of
ICT’s in the fields of effective communication, information gathering and knowledge
sharing play significant roles in women’s empowerment in Turkey.

In this study, the recent developments in the Turkish electricity distribution sector and the privatization practices have been discussed in the context of private sector visibility of public services and the related processes, applied policies, technical studies and reports. Changes in the Turkish electricity sector were provided within the framework of the periods. The development of the sector is explained from the perspective of Turkey. The study presents the historical background of the privatization of Turkish electricity distribution market. The reflections of privatization in the electricity distribution sector are discussed. Then, electricity market performance based on the data ensured by the primary figures in the sector are evaluated in terms of indicators such as prices, investment, capacity utilization rates, costs and profitability. In the past years, important improvements were achieved in the direction of liberalization of the sector. In terms of regional economic development, cluster structure and innovation have widely been examined in literature. Enterprises in cluster, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are likely to have more benefits than larger firms. It is found that clusters' effects on SMEs are, increased profits and exports, faster economic growth, stronger competitive advantages, more innovations, faster diffusion of knowledge, faster technological growth and increased productivity growth. This paper presents a literature review with concepts and arguments on cluster and innovation as regional development. The study focuses on cluster practices in developed and developing countries. As a conclusion, the research proposes government cluster policy options which support the emergence of clusters. It is thought that this comparative literature review serves as the basis for academicians, practitioners and policy makers.
