Mental Disorder? (original) (raw)

Well, I think that although homosexually was removed from the list of mental disorders, there are still people who regard it that way and always will. That's not something that anyone can change for them.

But I do think it's good that society as a whole has gotten more educated on the issue. Such as work of psychologists to demonstrate that homosexuality seems to be prenatal rather than a choice, and studies on how having a gay parent doesn't affect a child's development.

I guess normal is what society defines it as. So if society accepts homosexuality, it'll become more "normal." Although I think we're getting there.

You bring up some good points. Thanx for ur input!

As a homosexual, I don't think of myself as a mental patient. The thought 'I should get mental help' never went through my head. What I think is that people are so hooked on their view of normal that they don't see beyond themselves

well spoken. Almost poetic. I loved

Thanks I was actually really proud of that one it's unusual that anything that makes sense comes out of my mouth...err fingers...or whatever...Anyways, hoped what I said helped

As a strait (straight?) person who attends an art school in california, I'm moderatly sure that if I complained about gays and lesbians I would be lynched. Or simply sat on by my two lesbian friends untill my ribs caved in. But as for the rest of the country....

Well, people have always, always, always been afraid of the different, the wierd, the unusual, especialy when it would require a radical change in mindset. So instead of accepting a strange -and, to them, disturbing- new way of seeing the world, i.e, it's possible to have sex with your own gender, and for all you know there could be two guys/gals doin' it in the house right next to yours....It's so much easier to hate. But the good news is: everyone dies eventualy.

Take for instance, when Galileo discovered that the sun didn't revolve around the earth. As I recall, he died in a very unpleasent way, and people dusted their hands off and forgot about it. For a few generations. But some of the new people being born thought about it awhile more, and found that it was worth the scariness of the new idea to just have the new idea. And the best part of this was that all the close-minded old farts died. And then another generation was born that had even more people that were happy to think that there was a whole new cool solar system out there, and it worked a lot better than the old one. And now people laugh at you if you say the sun revolves around the earth.

So, now, thinking about people being gay (and horrible propaganda in children's cartoons that preach all those big, scary words like tolerance and diversity that are actualy commie plots to ruin their precious darlings's minds) is scary for a lot of people. Most people. Probably a lot of gay people out there too, who realy think they're messed up because they were unlucky enough to be born in arkansas or something. Both those people are going to die in, at most, four or five decades. And we'll still be alive. And there will be even more people with bigger views of the world, and they'll be the ones defining what's normal.

Sooo...yeah. End of speech. Three cheers for entropy!

WOW! THANX! You really put a lot of thought into what you said. What a great way of looking at the issue. It gives me lots of hope for the future.

http://www.hrc.org/millionformarriage/index.shtml please you and the other members of the group come here and sign the petition supporting gay marriage. They can't deny our love any longer. Please tell everyone you know to sign the petition. We gotta make this happen!

personally i would consider it an insult to be "normal" in this day and age, the logic behind the phycological problems stance is the same as (belive me i do not wish to offend anyone, ive just thought about this a bit and am giving, what i think is the real reason) say beastialiy, becasue back when this thory was first instated, there were so few homosexuals that would admit their sexuality that it could be considered by phycologysts to be insanity, as if the individual could not controll themselves. the problem is that some people have not gone any farther, i know people who think that homosexuals are insane, its really sick that people like that exist.

well tahts my 2 cents

Adam

theres definitely a lot of truth to what u say. Thanx Adam!

Well, when I took psych, we talked about "normal" as the ability to function within society. For example, a guy with obsessive compulsive disorder is not normal because he cannot function in society. His preoccupation with his particular obsession is all he can focus on, so he cannot go to work or have positive relationship with other people. So from that perspective, homosexuality cant be considered anything abnormal, because it doesn't prevent you from functioning or living a productive life in society. Its simply another character trait, not a hindrance to life.

And u are absolutely right!

Well, yeah, the normality is very subjective. I think that people should mind their own business and stop focusing so much on those matters that don't really matter at all.
