Using the historical narrative writing method, this article describes the history of Afghani’s life and works. Furthermore, the author analyses the main points of Afghani’s thoughts, especially in terms of rationalism, the six principles of truth (Arkan al-Sittah) in dealing with materialism, Qadha and Qadar, and the role of government, and writes down their relevance for Indonesia in facing competition in the era of globalisation. In the face of global competition, the author argues that Afghani’s thinking can be applied to Indonesia at two levels. At the country level, Indonesia can use it to improve its economic diplomacy strategy. Meanwhile, at the community level, the Indonesian people can apply it in determining the choice of social and economic activities to be more in favour of...

It applies a semi-systematic review of the literature to explore potential synergies between BMT and BUMDes in strategizing and implementing their social and financial roles to improve people's prosperity and well-being. This study finds two potential models for BMT-BUMDes synergies depending on whether BMT and BUMDes already exist in the village. First, a strategic partnership model can be established when both BMT and BUMDes have been established in a village. They can form a strategic alliance as separate entities, where BMT provide social and financial supports for BUMDes based on shariah principles. Second, an integrated BMT-BUMDes can be developed in three situations: 1) when there is BMT but no BUMDes, the BMT can expand its coverage to...

Change is inevitable in any business organizations to grow sustainably and build competitive adva... more Change is inevitable in any business organizations to grow sustainably and build competitive advantage. Reluctance to change will adversely affect the organizations in competition. PT Sanggar Sarana Baja, a company established in 1977, realized the necessity of change. In the last five years, the Company has been performing continuous changes to pursue its transformation in becoming a leading engineering company in the mining, oil and gas industries. The Company has been performing proper communication on change management during the period. However, its engineers have not fully utilized the integrated engineering software. This affects the collaborative working environment and performances of the organization. According to interviews with relevant officials, there was a lack of communication on the process. Hence, this research aims to investigate the influence of leadership communication on feeling valued and involved, and on employee engagement. The three variables are considered suitable in illuminating the phenomena under research. The quantitative research is applied to analyze the relationship among the variables by surveying 100 employees of the company located in Jakarta Head Office and its workshop in Banten. The findings indicate that feeling valued and involved mediate the positive and significant impact of leadership communication on employee engagement. The study also reveals that leadership communication does not have positive and significant effect on employee engagement. This research provides empirical evidence on the relationships among the three variables in the context of an engineering company in Indonesia, which contributes to the theory and practice of leadership communication and change management.

It is expected to significantly contribute to the Southeast Asian e-Commerce market being the fastest-growing Internet region in the world by 2020. As of 2018, 4 Indonesian startup companies are each valued at over 1 billion USD; having reached unicorn status. The large middle-class group of Indonesia is predominantly made up of millennials, who are vastly becoming the majority of the workforce, especially leading the Indonesian digital technology industry. However, companies, most of which are still generally managed by Generation X, often face issues in managing and retaining millennial employees. This study investigates the effect that several factors, namely trust in management, trust in peers, and empowerment, mediated by employee satisfaction, have on employee loyalty, to assess this issue. This quantitative research analyzes the causal relationships between the variab...

Using an exploratory qualitative case study, this study investigates why and how a company improves social, economic, and social conditions of communities surrounding its palm oil plantations through smallholder farmers empowerment and social capital development, from 1992 to 2011. A case study of a sustainable palm oil company in Indonesia was chosen as an exemplary case study for theoretical or purposive sampling. Primary and secondary data from company documents, media records, interviews and observations were analysed to develop a theoretical model. The study finds that the CSR program is driven by company’s strategic intention to fulfill their business needs by solving the social and environmental issues surrounding its palm oil plantations. Through smallholder farmers’ development program...

Using an exploratory qualitative case study, it investigates why and how a corporation translates its sustainability strategy (value proposition) into corporate foundations that generate social capital (value creation and delivery), and sustainability performance (value capture) from 1980 to 2011. Two corporate foundations dealing with small enterprise and skilled labour development within one of Indonesia’s largest public listed companies were chosen for cross-case analysis. Primary and secondary data from company documents, archival records, interviews and observations were analysed to develop a theoretical model.

It investigates the process under which a strategic CSR program of a company actually builds the capacity of small enterprises, thereby improving the company’s supply chain and sustainability. This research used an exploratory qualitative case study to understand the evolution of the linkages between sustainable development, CSR, social capital and corporate sustainability longitudinally, from 1980 to 2011. Primary and secondary data from company documents, archival records, interviews and observations were analysed to develop a theory. A single case study of micro, medium and small enterprise development (the MSME program) of Astra International (Astra) in the context of Indonesia was chosen as an exemplary case study for theoretical or purposive sampling. The study finds the importance for company to play both public and private roles in achieving its triple bottom line in developing countries. Astra’s CSR program is driven by the company’ intention to fulfil its needs of strong supply chain by solving the issue of low capacity of MSMEs in Indonesia. By conducting the MSME program, the company builds social capital that improves the capabilities of the owners and workers of small enterprises along the company’s supply chain, so they become reliable partners in achieving the company’s sustainability objectives. The theoretical model from the research can be replicated by other companies operating in emerging economies. This research adds to the growing number of developing country case studies, particularly from Indonesia, a very large developing country that has been under-researched.

Novelty: This research explores the development of social entrepreneurship through the university-based incubator program. Hence, it can be used to provide best practices for the program, especially for developing the tenants’ capacity. Research Methods: This study applies a case study approach and adopts Amartya Sen’s capability approach as an evaluative framework. The C-Hub UGM was chosen as a case since it was selected as a good example of a social entrepreneurship ...
