A total of 15 articles published in scholarly journals since 2002 (when the Budapest Open Access Initiative was released) were included in the study and five major themes emerged from their examination and analysis. The literature indicates that attitudes and perceptions of OA are varied across countries and across disciplines. Free access, which is perceived to facilitate wider dissemination of research outputs, is a strong incentive for publishing in OA. However, quality and reputation are the most important factors in selecting a journal and take priority over the availability of free access. Although OA is perceived to have many advantages over the traditional publication model, it raises some concerns too, especially in regard to the author-pays model, the quality of peer-review and the impact of the journals.

Fifty-nine graduate students affiliated with four Departments of Education voluntarily participated in the study. A specifically designed questionnaire was administered to gather information about the awareness of resources, the frequency of use, the kind of information sources preferred by students, the main reasons for using the resources, the perceived effectiveness of the searches, the factors encouraging their use and the major obstacles in terms of using them effectively. In addition, the authors sought information on the ways students identify the sources they use, the level of training they have received in using the services and their training needs. Results showed that the vast majority of the participants used Internet search engines rather than specialized databases and full-text resources. It is quite interesting, that nearly half of the respondents (49.1%) had never used ERIC, the fundamental resource of education literature. Only 6.8% became familiar with electronic resources by attending the library training programs. The main problem associated with the non-use of resources was lack of adequate searching skills. The above findings suggest limited use of electronic resources by graduate students, mainly due to absence of basic skills. In order to exploit the full potential of electronic information, university library should undertake a more active role in informing, promoting, and educating the members of the academic community.

The International Journal of Literacies, 2014

ABSTRACT Information literacy can be defined as the set of skills required to identify informatio... more ABSTRACT Information literacy can be defined as the set of skills required to identify information sources, access, evaluate and use information appropriately, effectively and ethically. Emerging technologies and information trends shape a new, complex and challenging information landscape, where information literacy, accompanied by other literacies, including textual, visual, digital and technological, is fundamental for learning, personal growth and success in school and in life. Developing information literacy competencies to a satisfactory level is one of the main goals of educational programs at all levels, from primary to tertiary education. This paper presents the development of “Hypatia”, an online information literacy tutorial for students attending upper secondary schools in Greece. The tutorial is based on the Big6 model, which is one of the most widely used approaches to teaching information and technology skills. It includes six modules, which can be used either in a linear or pick-and-mix style : (i) task definition, (ii) information seeking strategies, (iii) location and access, (iv) use of information, (v) synthesis, and (vi) evaluation. The tutorial encompasses some constructivist elements in the sense that is student-centered, it is flexible, it personalizes the problem-solving process, it encourages active learning and reflective evaluation. When designing the product the authors tried to use multimedia facilities as a vehicle for achieving pedagogical goals.

More specifically, a survey was conducted among first year high-school students in Thessaloniki, Greece. The procedure provided 344 usable questionnaires. The results of the study suggest that first year high-school students in Greece are accustomed to using computers in their daily live, they use the Internet to satisfy personal needs, but they have problems in locating and evaluating information for school work. The findings of the present study clearly suggest the need to embed information literacy instruction into secondary education, and also the need to create an online information literacy tutorial. Therefore, an online information literacy tutorial is being developed in line with Big6 model and constructivist approaches.

Both constructs were examined using explanatory factor analysis. Internal consistency of the factors of each construct was satisfactory. It was found that there was a strong negative relationship between the two concepts. Canonical correlation analysis demonstrated that anxiety explains more variance of the attitudes than vice versa. Another finding was that most of LIS students were not anxious toward computers and with positive attitudes. Factors correlated negatively with anxiety and positively with attitudes, were knowledge of English language, PC ownership, access of students to computers at younger ages, perceived advanced computer skills and computer experience as reflected by frequency of computer use.

The ISI Impact factor, a bibliometric indicator that measures the citation rate of the ''average'' article in a journal, has been widely used for the assessment of the quality of scientific production of individuals, research teams or institutions. The purpose of this paper was to present the impact factor, examine the main limitations in its calculation and applications and to give a general overview of the impact factor of education journals for the period 2000-2005. Several problems related to the calculation of the impact factor have raised serious concerns about its validity and usefulness. Our findings suggest that education journals included in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) represent about 11% of the active, referred, academic journals. Education journals have relative low impact factors, in absolute values and in comparison to other Social Science categories. Application of the intraclass correlation coefficient showed that journals belonging to the ''Education and Educational Research'' category had relative stable impact factor values for the examined 6 years. This was not the case for the journals from the ''Education, Special'' category. It was concluded that the use of impact factor for the evaluation of journals, articles and researchers should be done with considerable care. r

Ενδεικτικά αναφέρονται τα Univ.of Auckland, Open University, Univ.of California, Berkeley,
Univ.of California, Merced, Boise State University.
