Ever since the borders were created by Western Nations after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the region has been a hotbed of chaos, struggle, and violence. With the recent rise and fall of the Islamic State and Levant, and the inability for countries such as Syria and Iraq to maintain border control, it leaves scholars to question the validity of the borders that were drawn up by the Sykes-Picot Agreement in 1916.
Recent attempts to change this doctrine have been proposed but with no successful agreement reached. Numerous scholars have proposed different borders attempting to bring peace to the nation, and using the idea of what makes a state to support these theories as the backbone for this movement, however, as many countries that would benefit from this border shift is just as relevant as the numerous countries who’s best interest is in the region staying the way it is. Therefore, this essay will attempt to show the pros and cons of the remapping of the Levant region in the Middle East and how this would bring about more peace, or more warfare.
