"Call It the American Railway Union: The New Organization Will Endeavor to Abandon Strike Methods"

News report of the first preparatory meeting for organization of the American Railroad Union, a four hour session held in the Leland Hotel, Chicago. The gathering was chaired by George W. Howard, former Grand Chief of the Conductors' Union and elected a three person committee on Constitution and By-laws which included Eugene V. Debs, editor of Locomotive Firemen's Magazine; L.W. Rogers, editor of Age of Labor; and Sylvester Keliher, Secretary-Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Carmen.

Includes a lengthy direct quote of Eugene V. Debs, prime founder and future President of the ARU.

A formal organizational convention was ultimately held on April 11-17 at the Greene Hotel in Chicago.
