Scope and Content

The Collection is comprised primarily of correspondence to Larry Fagin. Most of the correspondence dates from 1968-1974. There is substantial correspondence with “New York School” poets Bill Berkson, Joe Brainard, Tom Clark, Clark Coolidge, Ron Padgett, James Schuyler, Tom Veitch, Anne Waldman and Lewis Warsh. There is also manuscript material of Bill Berkson, Joe Brainard, Ted Berrigan, John Ashbery, Clark Coolidge, Joseph Ceravolo, Tom Clark, John Giorno, John Godfrey, Richard Kolmar, Gerard Malanga, Charles North, Ron Padgett, John Perreault, Aram Saroyan, James Schuyler, Tony Towle, Tom Veitch, Anne Waldman, Lewis Warsh, Philip Whalen, Trevor Winkfield and others.

The collection covers three interrelated areas: 1. Personal correspondence; 2. Readings and other activities of the Poetry Project; 3. Submissions to Adventures in Poetry magazines (the actual magazines are located in the Archives & Special Collections' Little Magazine Collection Oversize). The final series is composed of a manual index of the correspondence created by Special Collections staff during initial processing of the collection.

Biography

Larry Fagin was born in 1939. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in English Literature, and did graduate work at the Gutenberg Institute in Mainz, Germany. From 1971-1976 he was co-director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in New York City, and he edited a poetry magazine, Adventures in Poetry, during this time. He founded the Danspace project and directed Danspace from 1975-1980. He has been a faculty member at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, since 1975 and directed the Naropa Poetics program from 1982-1984. He has taught poetry in the public schools for many years, and since 1972 has been poetry consultant in Brooklyn's District 22. He has published several books of poetry, and edited works by other poets. In 1993 he was Poet in Residence in Sedona, Arizona>. He received a NEA Fellowship in Poetry and a Poets Foundation Grant.

Abstract

Born in 1937, Larry Fagin was a poet and editor affiliated with the New York School. The Collection is comprised of correspondence to Larry Fagin. The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1968-1974.

Arrangement

Series I: Correspondence (undated, 1958-1976) is comprised of correspondence to Larry Fagin from other poets, artists, friends and family. Some of the correspondence is personal, and some related to Mr. Fagin's work with the Poetry Project. Also included is correspondence and memorabilia related to a tour by British poet, Basil Bunting, which was sponsored by the Poetry Project.

Series II: Submissions and Questionnaires (undated, 1970-1972) includes submissions for Adventures in Poetry No. 9 and Proust Questionnaires which Mr. Fagin sent out and which many people completed and returned to him.

Series III: Photographs (undated, 1962-1975) contains photographs from correspondents.

Series IV: Index to Correspondents (undated) contains a manual index to the correspondents in the collection.

Acquisition Information

Collection was purchased from Mr. Fagin in segments by the University between 1975 and 1977.
